[pages bound out of sequence: pp 477-482, 489-492, 483-488, 493-497] Letter from C Smith to G H Barlow, Secretary to the Government, dated 24th June 1798, enclosing for the information of the Governor General of India a list of all the plants collected by him during his residence of two years and six months at the Moluccas and other places, and shipped to the British possessions in India. Includes the spices clove and nutmeg and ‘all other valuable plants of the Moluccas’.
[pp 497-500] Letter from Robert Broff, John Crisp and Edward Coles, to W Jones, Commercial Resident at Amboyna, dated Fort Marlborough 12th January 1798, regarding the cultivation of clove and nutmeg on the Island of Sumatra.
[pp 500-504] Agreement made the 12th day of January 1798, between Robert Broff, Deputy Governor, and Council of Fort Marlborough on the one part, and Captain Hugh Moore, Commander of the ship Phoenix on the other part.
[pp 504-506] List of nutmeg and clove plants collected at the Spice Islands by Christopher Smith to be shipped on board the Phoenix.
[pp 507-514] Letter from A Fleming, Acting Superintendent, Calcutta Botanical Garden, to Duncan Campbell, Public Secretary, dated 14th July 1798, regarding the Account Current of Christopher Smith, and enclosing a list of plants collected at the Spice Islands by C Smith, and a list of plants at present in the Botanic Garden.
[p 515] Extract of Public letter from Bengal, dated 31st July 1798, stating that Mr Smith, Nursery man attached to the Botanic Garden, had been dispatched to the Eastern Islands for the purpose of collecting plants of the nutmeg, cloves and other spice trees.
[pp 517-530] Correspondence regarding obtaining a supply of Gomuti, August to September 1798. The correspondence includes a letter from A Fleming, Acting Superintendent, Calcutta Botanical Garden, to John Shore, Secretary Marine Board, dated 24th August 1798, on the history of the cultivation and uses of Gomuti, a species of Palm (pp 519-526).
[pp 531-540] Letter from A Fleming, Acting Superintendent, Calcutta Botanical Garden, to Duncan Campbell, Public Secretary, dated 11th October 1798, requesting the orders of the Governor General regarding the disposal of nutmeg trees lately brought from Amboyna to the Botanical Garden; the cultivation of nutmeg in India; recommends the establishment of a nutmeg plantation on Prince of Wales Island under the superintendence of Mr Smith, and that he should also take a stock of coffee and cinnamon plants to cultivate there; and also recommends that Mr Smith should be sent to Amboyna and the other Eastern Islands to collect useful plants and seeds, particularly the clove plant and a species of palm tree.

[pp 543-546] Extract from Public letter from Bengal, dated 25th December 1798, stating that it had been decided to send Mr Smith to Prince of Wales Island for the purpose of forming a plantation there, after which he had been instructed to proceed to the Eastward for the purpose of collecting a further supply of useful plants and seeds for the several Presidencies.
