- Scope & Content:
- Covering letter with two enclosures (folios 47-49) from Lt Tronson, Commanding Officer of the Honourable Company's ship Euphrates, and Lt Chitty, Officer in Charge of the Honourable Company's ship Tigris. The first enclosure is an extract of a letter from Lt James Tronson, Commanding Officer of the Honourable Company's Brig Euphrates, to Commodore Porter, Commanding Officer of the Indian Naval Squadron, Persian Gulf, dated 27 May 1851. The second enclosure is an extract from a letter from Lt Chitty, Officer in temporary change of the Honourable Company's Brigantine Tigris, to Commodore Porter, Commanding Officer of the Indian Naval Squadron, Persian Gulf, dated 19 May 1851. In his letter Chitty reports on current happenings in the Gulf, including the departure of boats from Ras el Khyma [Ra's al-Khaymah] and Abo Thubee [Abu Dhabi] for the pearl banks, and the impending arrival from Zanzibar of the Sultan of Muscat and Major Atkins Hamerton (Her Majesty's Consul at Zanzibar). Chitty also reports on events on the Persian coast of the Gulf, including possible conflict between the sheikhs of Assaloo [Asuluyeh] and Congoon [Bandar-e Kangan], the case of a stolen boat, and Persian subjects at Asuluyeh seeking to make the sheikh of that place pay tribute to the Shah.
