- Title:
- Letter no.186 of 1850 from the Secretary to the Government of Bombay, to Major Atkins Hamerton, Her Majesty's Consul and Honorable Company's Agent in the Dominions of His Highness the Imam of Muscat
- Scope & Content:
-
In the letter the Secretary sends copies of recent correspondence received from Samuel Hennell, Resident of the Persian Gulf (folios 3, 5-7), and a copy of his letter sent to Hennell (folio 13). The Secretary advises Hamerton to suggest to His Highness the Imam of Muscat—if appropriate—that the only likely means of satisfying the Chief of Sohar [Suhar] and his family, is the removal of the Imam's son, Governor of Muscat Syed Showeynee [Thuwaini bin Said].
The following enclosures follow the letter:
- English translation of a letter (folio 35), dated October 1850, from the Right Honorable Lucius Bentinck, Viscount Falkland, Governor of Bombay, to His Highness Syud Sueed [Said bin Sultan] the Imam of Muscat. In the letter Bentinck writes with 'much regret' of the actions of His Highness' son Syed Thoweynee [Thuwaini bin Said] who, says Bentinck, has 'grossly violated' the 1839 treaty with has actions against the Chief of Sohar. Bentinck finishes by recommending that His Highness seek the advice of the Political Agent at Muscat (Hamerton), who has 'your Highness's best interests at heart';
- An extract from a Government letter (folio 36), dated 3 October 1850, to the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Navy, instructing the ship Auckland to be sent to the Gulf via Muscat, to assess the state of affairs there, and to be put at the disposal of the Resident, 'for the performance of such duties as he may direct';
- English translation of a letter (folio 37), dated 3 October 1850, from the Right Honorable Lucius Bentinck, Viscount Falkland, Governor of Bombay, to the Governor of Muscat, His Excellency Syud Thoweynee [Thuwaini bin Said]. In the letter Bentinck expresses 'surprise and regret' at Thuwaini bin Said's actions against the Chief of Suhar, which are in violation of the 1839 treaty signed by Thuwaini bin Said's father and the British Government. Bentinck recommends that he 'be guided' by Persian Gulf Resident Lieutenant-Colonel Hennell, in negotiating a settlement and compensation to the 'injured' Chief.
