- Title:
- Letter No. 234 of 1850 from Lieutenant-Colonel Samuel Hennell, Resident in the Persian Gulf, to His Excellency Colonel Justin Sheil, Her Majesty's Minister Plenipotentiary and Envoy Extraordinary at the Court of Persia
- Scope & Content:
- The letter relates to incidents of slave trading on the Persian coast. It encloses translated extracts from a report received by the Government Agent at Lingah [Bandar-e Lengeh], Ahmed ben Moollah Houssein, describing the arrival at that port of two vessels from Berberah [Berbera] carrying forty-seven female slaves from Abyssinia (Ethiopia). The Agent estimates that each slave vessel carries twenty to thirty slaves. Samuel Hennell writes that he fears the Governor of Bandar-e Lengeh and the other chiefs of the Persian Gulf have realised that he can take no action against the slave trade beyond remonstrating with those involved, which he claims has little if any effect.
