- Scope & Content:
- Kemball reports on the arrival in Bushire from Bahrain of Sheikh Ali ben Khuleefa [Ali bin Khalifa], brother of the ruler, who has arrived with the intention of discussing with the Resident the Bahrain merchant Mahomed ben Saeed's financial claims on the Bahraini émigrés now residing at Kenn [Kish] island. Enclosed with the letter is a translation of correspondence addressed to Kemball from Sheikh Muhammad bin Khalifa of Bahrain, dated 16 September, in which Sheikh Mohammad sends Kemball his regards and presents his brother Sheikh Ali bin Khalifa to Kemball for interview regarding the aforementioned financial claims made upon certain Kish inhabitants. There is an enclosure with the letter, a translation of a letter (ff 55-56) from Kemball to Sheikh Mohamed ben Khuleefa [Muhammad bin Khalifa] Chief of Bahrain, dated 23 September 1852. In the letter Kemball acknowledges recept of Sheikh Muhammad's letter (ff 54-55), assuring the Sheikh he will do everything within the limits of his powers to recover the debts owed to Mohamed ben Saeed of Bahrain. Kemball states that he has requested his Agent at Lingah [Bandar-e Lengeh] to make enquiries at Kenn [Kish], but reiterates that the British Government cannot forcibly interfere with matters of mercantile debts.
