- Scope & Content:
-
Letter enclosing a copy of despatch No. 37 of 1867 regarding affairs in the Persian Gulf.
The enclosure approves of Sayed Soulem [Salim II bin Thuwaini] as successor to his late father and commends Lewis Pelly on excercising wise discretion in not coupling his visit of recognition with a visit of condolence; the Government's approval of Pelly's preventing Sayed Torkee [Turki bin Said] from invading Muskat [Muscat] and of the Wahabee [Wahhabi] withdrawal from Muskat territory, under Pelly's mediation, along with their current footing of amity.
The letter concludes by concurring with the high estimate with which Pelly has been held because of his actions with regards to Muskat and the Wahabees.
Also enclosed is a clipping from the Overland Mail newspaper titled 'Spirit of the Press: The foreign policy of Sir John Lawrence' which is dated 26 January 1867.
