- Title:
- Letter No. 95 of 1867 from Lieutenant Colonel Lewis Pelly, Her British Majesty's Political Resident Persian Gulf, in Shiraz to Charles Gonne, Secretary to Government, Political Department, Bombay
- Scope & Content:
-
Letter regarding a telegram received by Pelly from the acting agent at Muskat [Muscat] regarding the anticipated arrival of Sayed Torkee [Turki bin Said] with a large force and the Sultan's request for two man of wars.
The letter requests Government's advice on what to do should Torkee succeed and the steps that have already been taken to reinforce the British position of only interfering if the attack is by sea and that he has advised the agent at Muskat not to interfere in any land attacks and to refrain from committing Government to any policy.
The letter goes on to outline Pelly's intentions to travel to Muskat as soon as possible and his thoughts on how the situation may play out, which he believes is dependent on who the Omman [Oman] tribes' support and whether the actions now unfolding constitute a civil war.
The letter also advises against the actions recommended by the Political Agent of bombardment and non recognition of Sayed Torkee as it contradicts the policy line taken when Sayed Soulem [Salim II bin Thuwaini] became de-facto ruler and would most likely weaken rather than strengthen Muskat.
This is an original letter which is located in between folios 129 and 134 of the volume.
