The collection consists of the following small collections of papers; with Colls 4-14 being extracts from a Narrative of the Proceedings of the Government of Bengal, in the General Department (Emigration), for the first six months of 1859, No.3 of 1860, dated the 9th February 1860:
- Coll 1, Public letter received from India, No.5 of 1860, dated 12 January 1860, transmitting two statements showing the times at which the successful candidates for appointments in Her Majesty's Indian Civil Service, passed their examinations in the native languages up to the 1st January 1860, and also as regards the students who obtained their appointments from Haileybury. The statements are not present in the file, having been sent to the Civil Service Commission on the 24th May 1860.
- Coll 2, Correspondence on the subject of the adoption of precautionary measures against the occurrence of fires on board emigrant ships, January to February 1860. Included is a copy of the Public letter received from India, No.18 of 1860, dated 23 February 1860.
- Coll 3, Report by the Board of Examiners on the character and attainments of the Junior Civil Servants qualified for public service in the year 1859. Included is a copy of the Public letter received from India, No.20 of 1860, dated 2 March 1860.
- Coll 4, Reports by the Protector of Emigrants at the Port of Calcutta on the Emigrants who returned from Mauritius and the West Indies on board the ships Earl of Derby, St Bernard, Calliope, Punjab, Appleton, Futtay Salam, Zemindar, Morayshire, and Regina, October 1858 to February 1860. The reports include copies of the Deed of Engagement between the ship's Captain and the Protector of Emigrants in the Colony, the Bond entered into by the ship's Captain, and relevant certificates, for all the ships except the Morayshire for which there is only the report by the Protector of Emigrants at Calcutta.
- Coll 5, Correspondence showing that reports by the Protector of Emigrants at Mauritius on the Emigrants landed there had been received by the Protector of Emigrants at Calcutta, May 1859 to February 1860.
- Coll 6, Correspondence regarding the rule adopted in adjusting the claims of the Emigrants who returned from Trinidad by the Morayshire, February 1859 to February 1860. The correspondence includes a list of the Emigrants who returned from Trinidad to Calcutta by the ship Morayshire, giving the name of each passenger with the money deposited in the Treasury to be transmitted to India, and the amount consigned to the Surgeon Superintendent's care.
- Coll 7, Application by Mr Eales, Officiating Emigration Agent, for unlimited credit at the General Treasury on account of the emigration of Indian labourers to Mauritius, April 1859 to February 1860.
- Coll 8, Explanation from the Mauritius Government why no enquiry was made into the cause of the mortality on board the Blue Jacket and on Flat Island, January 1859 to February 1860.
- Coll 9, Correspondence regarding the revised scale of provisions on board of every Emigrant vessel from Mauritius to Calcutta, February 1859 to February 1860.
- Coll 10, Application by Captain John G Reddie, Master Attendant at the Port of Calcutta, for a separate allowance for performing the duties of Protector of Emigrants at Calcutta, October 1858 to February 1860.
- Coll 11, Correspondence regarding the despatch of the Ellenborough with Emigrants to Demerara after the expiry of the proper emigration season, February 1859 to February 1860.
- Coll 12, Edward Owen, Chief Officer of the ship Lord Hungerford, authorised to proceed to Mauritius in command of the vessel in the absence of the Commander, Captain John W Hurst, February 1859 to February 1860.
- Coll 13, Application from Captain G W Simmons, Commander of the Calliope, to be permitted to retain platforms on board his ship, February 1859 to February 1860.
- Coll 14, Complaint by Thomas Meadows, Landholder and Special Agent at Mauritius, against the proceedings and conduct of Mr Eales, Officiating Emigration Agent, May 1859 to February 1860.
- Coll 15, Instructions from the Government of India to the Government of Bengal on the subject of the exemption of the seeds imported by the Agricultural and Horticultural Society from payment of Customs duty, February to March 1860. Included is a copy of the Public letter received from India, No.28 of 1860, dated 17 March 1860.
