- Title:
- Letter no.23 to Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Ephraim Gerrish Stannus, Resident in the Persian Gulf, from William Newnham, Chief Secretary, Government of Bombay
- Scope & Content:
-
The letter concerns relations between Mahomed ben Ali [Muhammad bin Ali], chief of the Beni Boo Ali [Banī Bū ‘Alī], and the Imam of Muscat [Sa‘id bin Sulṭān al-Sa‘id]. Newnham writes that Muhammad bin Ali is fearful of the Imam of Muscat's intentions towards him and his tribe, and suggests that this current situation may have been brought about by British interference in the region.
There are two enclosures with Newnham's letter:
1. The translation of a letter (folios 16-19) from Muhammad bin Ali, to the Honourable Mountstuart Elphinstone, Governor of Bombay, dated 1 February 1825. Muhammad bin Ali states that, since his interview with the Resident [Stannus], the Imam of Muscat and other individuals have been intriguing against him, and that he no longer feels safe.
2. Draft of a letter (folios 20-21) from the Honourable Mountstuart Elphinstone, Governor of Bombay, to Mahomed bin Ali, dated 23 February 1825. Elphinstone states that, if Muhammad bin Ali desires to reside permanently in Bombay, it should be done with the consent of the Imam of Muscat. Elphinstone insists that the Resident will look out for Muhammad bin Ali's safety, but insists he must do all he can to maintain the goodwill and confidence of the Imam.
