- Title:
- Letter from J Adam, Secretary to the Government, Camp Barelly to William Bruce, Resident at Bushire
- Scope & Content:
-
The letter is enclosing a copy of a dispatch from the Resident at Hydrabad [Hyderābād] dated 22 October 1814, along with the secretary's reply. The dispatch contains information which will be of use to the Resident in the event that any 'misrepresentations' are made by Mirza Mohummud Sadick [Mīrzā Muḥammad Ṣādiq] (also spelt Saudick in the correspondence) and Aka Syed Alli [Āghā Sayyid ‘Alī] about their treatment by the British authorities in India. The enclosures are detailed in the list below:
1. A copy of a letter from J Adam, Secretary to the Government, at Camp Barelly to Charles H Russell, Resident at Hydrabad, dated 26 November 1814. The letter conveys the Government's approval of the Resident's handling of the arrival of two Persian envoys, Mirza Sadick and Syed Ali in Hydrabad.
2. Translation of a letter from Mirza Mohummud Sadick and Aka Syed Ali, received 3 August 1814. It concerns a diplomatic trip to Hydrabad the authors claim to be making on behalf of the Persian Government to foster friendly relations with the Princes of Hindostan. It is claimed that the envoys have not received proper treatment from the British authorities in India and a request is made for this to be rectified.
3. Translation of a letter from George Swinton, Persian Secretary to the Government, on the Ganges at Mirzapore to Lieutenant Charles H Russell, Acting Resident at Hyderabad, dated 14 September 1814. It concerns two Persian envoys, Mirza Mohummud Sadick and Aka Syed Alli. The Resident is instructed that they should not be treated as diplomatic envoys as they have requested, since the envoys in question do not have official papers, but as private subjects of an allied power. The Resident is further instructed not to recommend their reception by the Nizam, Nasir-ud-Daula, Asaf Jah IV, and to discourage them from attempting to make a trip to Calcutta.
4. A copy of a letter from J Adams, Secretary to the Government, on board the HC Cruizer Benares to Lieutenant Charles H Russell, Acting Resident at Hyderabad, dated 5 September 1814. It instructs the Resident not to recommend the reception of Mirza Mohummud Sadick and Aka Syed Alli by the Nizam, Nasir-ud-Daula, Asaf Jah IV. It further indicates that the pair should be discouraged from any attempt to visit Fort William, Calcutta.
