- Title:
- Letter No. 5: Lieutenant-Colonel Samuel Hennell, Resident in the Persian Gulf, Bushire, to His Excellency Lieutenant-Colonel Justin Sheil, Her Majesty's Minister Plenipotentiary and Envoy Extraordinary at the Court of Persia, Tehran
- Scope & Content:
-
This letter includes four enclosures:
- Translation of a letter, dated December 1849, from His Royal Highness the Prince of Shiraz to Samuel Hennell regarding the Nuwabi Hajeea, mother of Mahomed Mirza, and her claim that an Armenian named Mr Constantine Arrakeel (also referred to as Aga Baba) illegally took possession of some of her estates at Cazeroon [Kāzerūn].
- Translated extract of a letter, dated December 1849, from the Niwabi Hajeea to Hennell, requesting that Hennell send Aga Baba to Shiraz to answer her claims against him.
- Translation of a letter, dated 4 January 1850, from Hennell to His Royal Highness Bahram Meerza, Governor of Fars, in which Hennell writes that the estates at Cazeroon are in fact the property of Mr Arratoon Simon, a British dependent, who is now a writer in Hennell's office. Hennell argues that His Royal Highness has been misinformed regarding Aga Baba and suggests that if the Nuwabi Hajeea claims the estates then she should appoint a wukeel in Bushire, in order to buy the cause in the law court. Hennell states that Aga Baba's state of health will not permit him to travel. Hennell concludes by reporting that Aga Baba has arranged for his wukeel [wakeel] to appear on his behalf.
- Translation of a letter, dated 4 January 1850, from Hennell to the Nuwabi Hajeea, in which Hennell writes that the estates in question belong to Mr Arrathoon Simon, a writer in his office. Hennell advises that the Nuwabi Hajeea appoint an agent to buy her cause in the law courts of Bushire, as Hennell cannot spare his writer's services. Hennell concludes by stating that Aga Baba has appointed his wukeel to appear in the law court of Shiraz on his behalf.
