Letter from Lewis Pelly, on board May Frere, Muscat to 'Right Honourable Sir'
- Scope & Content:
-
Letter regarding the conclusion of recent difficulties with Syed Torkee [Said Turki]; Pelly's decision to remain longer in Muscat owing to the recent actions of the acting Political Agent, Lieutenant George Andrew Atkinson and outlining the Sultan of Muscat's disposition, current military and financial situation and relations with the surrounding tribes.
The letter goes on to discuss recent rumours that the marine cable is to be transferred from Mussendom [Musandam] to Aujam [Hengam] and detailing Sir Bartle Frere's thoughts on the importance of Aujam.
Other matters discussed in the letter include the movements of vessels in the Gulf; Pelly's search for a suitable Arab horse for his excellency; giving his thoughts on the Prince Governor of Fars whom he has recently met; and expressing his disappointment with Mr Alison's agreement with the Persian Foreign Minister that Pelly can no longer communicate directly with the Prince but must do so via a representative at Bushire.
The recipient of the letter is only referred to as Right Honourable Sir or Your Excellency and is most likely the Sir John Lawrence, Viceroy of India.
