- Title:
- Letter no.205 of 1854 from Captain Arnold Kemball, Resident in the Persian Gulf, to Henry Anderson, Secretary to the Government of Bombay
- Scope & Content:
-
The letter and its enclosures relate to recent Persian Gulf squadron reports from the Arab and Persian coasts. The first report concerns the payment without protest of damages by the Shaikh of Ejmam [Ajman] to the inhabitants of a village on the island of Kishm [Qeshm], after the plunder of property by subjects of Ajman. The second report concerns the retirement of Jannash Mirza from Bandar Abbas [Bandar-e Abbas], causing tensions in that place to subside.
A number of enclosures are included with the file:
1. Letter no.72 of 1854 (folio 228) from Commodore George Robinson, Commanding Officer Persian Gulf Squadron, to Kemball, dated 2 May 1854, announcing the payment of fifty-four Shah Keroons [qirans] by the Shaikh of Ajman, to be paid to the inhabitants of a village at Qeshm.
2. Letter no.94 of 1854 (folio 229) from Robinson to Kemball, dated 29 May 1854. Aside from enclosing a packet from Bombay, Robinson’s letter reports on relative calm in the lower Gulf, as a result of the Imam of Muscat’s return from Zanzibar, and the Price of Fars having departed for Shiraz.
3. Letter no.87 of 1854 (folio 230) from Robinson to Lieutenant Stradling, Commanding the Honourable Company’s Schooner Constance, dated 22 May 1854. The letter is an instruction to Stradling to remain stationed at Bassadore for the time being, making occasional patrols of the Arab coast.
4. Letter no.71 of 1854 (folio 231) from Robinson to Kemball, dated 2 May 1854. The letter relates to the recent complaint made by Sheikh Sultan ben Suggar [Sultan bin Saqr] over the abduction of four slaves belonging to his subjects.
