The papers consists of the following collections corresponding to a Despatch from the Government of India to the Secretary of State for India, in the Home Department (Public), dated the 27th May 1859, No.65, and to various Emigration Narratives from the Government of Bengal, General Department. Each of the collections has a cover sheet, a table of contents, and an extract either from the Government of India's Despatch or from the Emigration Narrative:
- Coll 1, Reports of the Protector of Emigrants at Calcutta, Madras, and Bombay, for the periods February to April 1858 for Calcutta, March to April 1858 for Madras, and March to May 1858 for Bombay.
- Coll 2, Appointment of Captain T Hill to officiate as Assistant Protector of Emigrants at Calcutta, March 1858 to May 1859.
- Coll 3, Correspondence regarding the Rule for the computation of the number of Emigrants on board ships, January 1858 to May 1859.
- Coll 4, Emigration Narrative for the first six months of 1858, No.7 of 1859, dated 11th March 1859: reports by the Protector of Emigrants at the Port of Calcutta on the Emigrants returned from Mauritius and the West Indies on board the ships Hamilla Mitchell, Shaw Alum (passenger list included), Futteh Shah Alum or Futteh Shaw Alum (passenger list included), Thomas Hamblin, Soubahder (passenger list included), Eveline, Calliope (passenger list included), Earl of Sefton (passenger list included), and Startled Fawn (passenger list included), December 1857 to March 1859.
- Coll 5, Emigration Narrative for the first six months of 1858, No.7 of 1859, dated 11th March 1859: correspondence relating to the proofs of marriages of Indians contracted in India, October 1857 to March 1859.
- Coll 6, Emigration Narrative for the first six months of 1858, No.7 of 1859, dated 11th March 1859: Correspondence regarding 400 and 450 Emigrants shipped respectively on board the Earl of Sefton and Blue Jacket for Mauritius, notwithstanding the rule of not embarking 350 at a time, January 1858 to March 1859.
- Coll 7, Emigration Narrative for the first six months of 1858, No.7 of 1859, dated 11th March 1859: Correspondence regarding fees levied from Emigrants to the West Indies during the season 1857-58, April 1858 to March 1859.
- Coll 8, Emigration Narrative for the first six months of 1858, No.7 of 1859, dated 11th March 1859: Papers regarding measures to protect the return Emigrants by the ship Hamilla Mitchell from any loss in their savings by the rate of Exchange, June 1857 to March 1859.
- Coll 9, Emigration Narrative for the first six months of 1858, No.7 of 1859, dated 11th March 1859: Arrangement made for the conduct of the duties of the Emigration Agent at the Port of Calcutta during the absence of T Caird, January 1858 to March 1859.
- Coll 10, Emigration Narrative for the last six months of 1858, No.15 of 1859, dated 31st August 1859: reports by the Protector of Emigrants at the Port of Calcutta on the Emigrants who returned from Mauritius and the West Indies on board the ships Regina, Appleton, Blue Jacket, Bucephalus, Sir George Pollock, Calliope, White Eagle, Punjab (passenger list included), Shah Jehan, and Rajasthan, June 1858 to August 1859.
- Coll 11, Emigration Narrative for the last six months of 1858, No.15 of 1859, dated 31st August 1859: Papers relating to the prosecution of Captain Frost, Commander of the ship Blue Jacket, for breach of the Emigration Act, August 1858 to August 1859.
- Coll 12, Emigration Narrative for the last six months of 1858, No.15 of 1859, dated 31st August 1859: Papers regarding the attention of the Colonial Government at Mauritius having been drawn to the fact of no inquiry having been made into the causes of the extraordinary mortality amongst the Emigrants from India on board the Blue Jacket, September 1858 to August 1859.
- Coll 13, Emigration Narrative for the last six months of 1858, No.15 of 1859, dated 31st August 1859: Papers relating to a case of decoying by crimps and imprisoning certain labourers who had come down to Calcutta from the Upper Provinces in search of employment, September 1858 to August 1859.
- Coll 14, Emigration Narrative for the last six months of 1858, No.15 of 1859, dated 31st August 1859: Cover letter submitting the annual returns of Emigrants, who had proceeded to, and returned from, Mauritius and the West Indies during the year 1857-58 [returns not present].
- Coll 15, Emigration Narrative for the last six months of 1858, No.15 of 1859, dated 31st August 1859: Correspondence regarding the services of Hindu Nurses or Ward Coolies engaged for employment in the hospitals of Mauritius, April 1858 to August 1859.
- Coll 16, Emigration Narrative for the last six months of 1858, No.15 of 1859, dated 31st August 1859: Correspondence regarding money left by an Emigrant who died on board the ship White Eagle from the West Indies, and paid to the District Charitable Society, September 1858 to August 1859.
- Coll 17, Emigration Narrative for the last six months of 1858, No.15 of 1859, dated 31st August 1859: Correspondence regarding a proposition from Messrs Barry, Smith and Co., for the importation of labourers to Cachar, for the purpose of being employed in the cultivation and manufacture of Tea in that District, May 1858 to August 1859.
- Coll 18, Emigration Narrative for the last six months of 1858, No.15 of 1859, dated 31st August 1859: Question submitted by the Protector of Emigrants at the Port of Calcutta as to whether the receipts for advances drawn by the Emigration Agent on the Sub-Treasurer on account of emigration to Mauritius should be countersigned by the Protector or Auditor, September 1858 to August 1859.
