- Title:
- Letter No 70 from Ephraim Gerrish Stannus, Resident in the Persian Gulf, at Bassidore [Bāsaʻīdū] to William Newnham, Chief Secretary to the Government, Political Department, Bombay
- Scope & Content:
-
The letter is a summary report on the Resident's proceedings since leaving Muscat on 8 December 1824. This includes his rendezvous with the HC Cruizer Nautilus at Bassidore [Bāsaʻīdū], and his trip to Sharga [Sharjah], where the Resident affected a reconciliation between Sooltan bin Suggar [Sulṭān bin Saqr] and Shaikh Tanoon [Ṭaḥnūn bin Shakhbūṭ Āl Nahyān].
It further reports that the Resident had to return to Bassidore on 27 December 1824 to seek medical assistance for the Captain of the HC Cruizer Benares, and the ship's Assistant Surgeon. It notes that the Benares has since been ordered to return to Bombay, and that the Resident intends to return to Bushire aboard the HC Cruizer Ternate, as he is also suffering from fever.
The item has one enclosure, which is a copy and translation of the peace agreement negotiated by the Resident while at Sharga; this agreement was made between Sa‘īd bin Sultān Āl Sa‘īd, the Imam of Muscat and Shaikh Tanoon (Party One), with Sooltan bin Suggar [Sulṭān bin Saqr] (Party Two).
