Letter regarding the deteriorating condition of Jacob's eyesight; his response to recent accusations made against him and his decision to remove himself from the Persian medal rolls. The letter also informs Pelly of his intention of sending him copies of his order regarding the Persian War and regarding Pelly's interview with Lord Stanley.
Enclosed with the letter are the following:
- Letter from Ross Balfour Moore, Calcutta to John Jacob, 2 August 1858 regarding his health; news of plunderers and rebels on the road to Futtehpoor [Fatehpur]; a description of the villages on the banks of the Ganges; difficulties caused by steamers running aground; comparing the military styles of (General Nathaniel?) Forbes and [General Sir Edward] Lugard; his dislike of Calcutta; and Sir Colin Campbell's movements. Also enclosed is a duplicate copy of this letter which was sent directly to Lewis Pelly.
- Letter from Peter Melvill Melvill, Neemuch [Nimach], to John Jacob, 7 August 1858, regarding obtaining miniatures of both the General and Charles Frederick Ogilvie; the situation in Quetta; and news of Malcolm Green.
- Letter from Henry Cook, Bombay to John Jacob, 10 August 1858, regarding Charles Frederick Collier's latest appointment and his thoughts on the news from various regiments.
- Letter from Henry Green, Khelat [Kalat] to John Jacob, 15 August 1858, regarding news of Gool Mahomed [Gul Muhammad] and his attempts to tamper with Green's escort and reporting generally on the state of the province of Scind [Sind].
