- Title:
- Letter (Office No 30 of 1851) from Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Hennell, Resident in the Persian Gulf, at Bushire to Lieutenant Colonel Justin Sheil, HM Minister Plenipotentiary and Envoy Extraordinary at the Court of Persia, Tehran
- Scope & Content:
-
The letter reports on the expansion, and consolidation of the power of Feerooz Meerza, Prince of Fars Province; it notes that Behbeham [Behbehān] is almost completely subjugated, but that Lars is still not under control.
It is further reported that as a result of these military advances Shaikh Saeed ben Guzeeb, Chief of Lingah [Khārk, Jazīreh-ye], has sought the assistance of Shaikh Sultan ben Suggur [Sulṭān bin Saqr] to evacuate women and children.
The report also mentions that the Prince of Fars has sent out instructions to Lingah, Asseeloo, and Congoon, prohibiting the slave trade; it is noted that it is the opinion of the Resident that these measures are unlikely to achieve results. It also notes that an expedition against Karrack [Khārk, Jazīreh-ye], and Bakir Khan is being discussed.
As for Bushire, the letter reports that the town is prosperous, its fortifications are being strengthened, and that there is satisfaction with the new Dwrya Beggee. It further mentions that the Suibaz have been committing petty robberies, and that Hajee Kuwam has been reprimanded for attempting to create tensions between the Suibaz and the British Residency.
