Letter No 105 of 1851 from Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Hennell, Resident in the Persian Gulf, at Bushire to Justin Sheil, HM Minister Plenipotentiary and Envoy Extraordinary at the Court of Persia, Tehran
- Scope & Content:
-
The letter is reporting that news has been received from Lars [Lār] indicating that Fort Beyda has surrendered to the Royal troops; it is noted that reports are circulating indicating that Mirza Naeem – commander of the Royal troops – bribed Moostufa Kooly Khan of Bastuk to give up the fight. It further reports that in consequence, Mirza Naeem has demanded outstanding tribute due to Shiraz from the ports between Charrack [Khārk, Jazīreh-ye] and Lingah [Bandar-e-Lengeh]; it notes that Shaikh Saeed, Chief of Lingah, is expected to resist having received re-enforcements from Shaikh Sultan ben Suggur [Sulṭān bin Saqr]. It is further mentions that Persian flags have been ordered to be hoisted at Bushire, Congoon, Lingah, and Bunder Abbass [Bandar-e ʻAbbās].
It also reports on Bushire, stating that there have been increasing disturbances since the Prince Governor of Far's departure; these disturbances are attributed to Bakir Khan. It reports that the Hajee Kowam has summoned Roostum Khan, Chief of Shuboon Kara, and Abbass Khan, Chief of Zeera, to address this; both have refused to obey. It notes that the Resident expects the former to come to terms, and the latter to resist. It further mentions the implementation of control over the sale of deeds of land, houses, or property to foreigners.
