Letter regarding affairs in Oman and Muscat and their current state of confusion, including Merewether's thoughts on Syed Nazir [Nazir bin Thuwaini] and Syed Torkee [Turki bin Said] as candidates for the Sultanship and their popularity with the people, as well as the lack of policy by the supreme Government there.
The letter goes on to discuss news of Gwadar from Edward Charles Ross; the unsettled nature of affairs in Mekran and Sistan; and his views on Colonel Robert Phayre's actions complicating matters and his decision to insist on all decisions being approved by himself first.
The letter concludes by giving news of Pelly's brother who has been offered a position in Poona [Pune] division.
