- Title:
- Letter no.347 of 1856 from Commander Felix Jones, Resident in the Persian Gulf, to Henry Anderson, Secretary to the Government of Bombay
- Scope & Content:
-
The letter and its enclosures relate to recent communications with the Joasmee [Qāsimī] chief, Shaikh Sultan ben Suggur [Sultan bin Saqr] over Persian actions in Lingah [Bandar-e Lengeh] and Jones’s insistence that the Shaikh should not interfere with the situation at Bandar-e Lengeh; exchanges with the British Agent at Sharjah [Hajjī Yaqoob], in light of reports of Wahabee [Wahhābī] forces making their way to Oman, probably in response to the Arab coast Shaikhs being in arrears on their annual tribute payments to the Wahhābī chief. The following enclosures follow Jones’s letter:
1. The purport of a letter (folio 122) from Shaikh Sultan bin Saqr to Jones, dated 3 November 1856;
2. The translation of a letter (folio 123) from Jones to Shaikh Sultan bin Saqr, dated 19 November 1856;
3. The translation of a letter (folio 124) from Jones to the British Agent at Sharjah [Hajjī Yaqoob], dated 19 November 1856;
4. The purport of a letter (folio 125) from Yaqoob to Jones, dated 5 November 1856;
5. The translation of a letter (folio 126) from Jones to Yaqoob, dated 19 November 1856.
