- Title:
- Letter no.2654 of 1856 from Henry Anderson, Secretary to the Government of Bombay, to the Acting Resident in the Persian Gulf [Commander Felix Jones]
- Scope & Content:
-
The letter is a covering letter, its enclosures relating to relations between the Imam of Muscat and the Persian Government, and protection to the region’s shipping. The enclosures are as follows:
1. An extract of paragraph 9 of despatch no.8 of 1856 (folio 155) from the Court of Directors, dated 20 February 1856, regretting the continued hostilities between the Persian Government and the Imam of Muscat;
2. The substance of letter no.1038 of 1854 from the Persian Department (folio 156) from Mirza Saduk, temporarily in charge of the Persian Consulate at Bombay, to Anderson, dated 25 December 1854. The letter concerns the disruption to shipping caused by the conflict between Persia and Muscat, and raises the question of British guarantees of safety for Persian cargo vessels from Omani forces;
3. Resolution no.925 of 1855 (folio 157) of Government in the Political Department, dated 27 February 1855, which is a response to Mirza Saduk’s letter (folio 156), stating that as the vessels in question are foreign vessels flying under foreign flags, the Government can make no guarantees on their safety once they have left Bombay;
Note that the letter and its enclosures are physically separated into two separate bound volumes, folio 154 being the last folio of the first volume, and folio 155 being the first folio of the second volume.
