- Title:
- Letter from William Lockyer Merewether, Kurrachee [Karachi] to Lewis Pelly
- Scope & Content:
-
Letter regarding the sudden arrival of the hot weather in Sind having forced Merewether to halt his tour and return to Kurrachee [Karachi].
The letter goes on to describe in detail his meeting with Mr Robert Davies including his first impressions of the new Governor of Punjab who he believes will be very succesful in his new role, and difficulties with Captain Robert Sandeman, who will be working under Colonel Robert Phayre and Merewether's thoughts on having to manage both of them.
The letter also discusses Sir Henry Durand's untimely death and includes Merewether's thoughts on him as a person and his work in Punjab and on the frontier; Mr Charles Alison at Tehran and questioning how long he will remain in his role, as well as his impact on the question of a boundary between Beloochistan [Baluchistan] and Seistan [Sistan]; and the Government of India's decision regarding the 'grain riot case'.
The letter goes on to comment on Pelly's report on the sickness and suffering at Bushire and offering his help, as well as observing that although their harvest has been plentiful the merchants who are selling to Bushire and Baghdad have raised their prices.
The letter concludes by reporting on the recent actions of the French (Franco-Prussian War 1870-71), who having been defeated by the Prussians were now 'like children fighting amongst themselves'.
