The letter and its enclosures relate to the surrender of two slaves to the British Agent at Sharjah, by a Shaikh under the authority of Shaikh Sultan bin Suggur [Sultan bin Saqr]. Jones writes that the slaves have reached Bassidore, where they are in the care of Commodore Richard Ethersey, Commanding Officer Persian Gulf Squadron, who intends to despatch them to Bombay at the first opportunity, and requests bounty money for the two slaves to be forwarded to him. The enclosures to Jones’s letter are as follows:
1. Letter no.188 of 1856 (folios 268-69) from Ethersey to Jones, dated 10 September 1856, discussing letters he has received from Shaikh Sultan bin Saqr and Said bin Battye [Sa’id bin Butti] of Debai [Dubai], relating to hostilities and the theft of goods from Aboothabee [Abu Dhabi], two slaves received from the British Agent at Sharjah, Hadjee Yacoob [Hajjī Yaqoob], and reports of an alliance between the Shaikhs of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Humreah [Ḩamrīyah] and Amulgavine [Umm al-Qaywayn] against Sharjah and Ajmaum [Ajman];
2. The copy of a letter (folio 270) from Lieutenant Campbell, Commanding the Company Schooner Constance, to Ethersey, dated 4 September 1856, containing details of Campbell’s tour of the Arab coast, and a description of the current situation at Abu Dhabi in the wake of the the invasion and plunder of the town by forces from Dubai and Sharjah.
