The collection consists of the following small collections of papers, each of which has a title page, a table of contents, and an extract from the Narrative.
Narrative of the Proceedings of the Government of Bengal, in the General Department (Miscellaneous subjects), for the 2nd Quarter of 1858, No.15, dated 30th October 1858 (except for Coll 9, which is an extract from a Narrative of the Proceedings of the Government of Bengal, in the General Department (Miscellaneous subjects), for the 3rd Quarter of 1857, No.26, dated 1st December 1857):
- Coll 1, Claim by the Inspector of Jails, Lower Provinces, to be relieved from paying demurrage incurred owing to the detention of his dak between Rungpore [Rangpur] and Bogra, February to October 1858.
- Coll 2, Proposal for placing a district line of steamers between Dacca and Assam, March to October 1858.
- Coll 3, Correspondence regarding the allowances drawn by the Uncovenanted Assistants of the Bengal Secretariat who accompanied the Lieutenant Governor to Darjeeling, January 1857 to October 1858.
- Coll 4, Complaint made by the Additional Judge of Bihar owing to the refusal of the Government Steam Agent at Dinapore to deliver certain boxes of stationery on a verbal message, March to October 1858.
- Coll 5, Correspondence regarding the discontinuance of the Dak kept up between Calcutta and Murshidabad by His Highness the Nawab Nazim of Bengal, September 1857 to October 1858.
- Coll 6, Disbursement of 10 rupees per mensem on account of Establishment for the smallpox Hospital at Darjeeling, November 1857 to October 1858.
- Coll 7, Insertion of a sentence in para.28 of the rules for the control and management of the Lunatic Asylum at Bhowanipore authorised, March to October 1858.
- Coll 8, Reports on the measures which had been adopted by the Government of Bengal for the relief of distressed ryots in the districts (Nuddea, Murshidabad, Rajshahye [Rajshahi], Pabna and Malda) which had suffered from the late innundation [flood], July 1857 to October 1858. Includes on page 53 a colour plan of Panch koah Bridge on the Dinagepoor [Dinajpur] road, erected in 1857.
- Coll 9, Reports on the measures which had been adopted by the Government of Bengal for the relief of distressed ryots in the districts (Nuddea, Murshidabad, Rajshahye [Rajshahi], Pabna and Malda) which had suffered from the late innundation [flood], February to December 1857.
- Coll 10, Correspondence regarding the supply of stationery by the Government of Bombay to the Governor General's Agent at Indore, March to October 1858.
- Coll 11, Dismissal from the service of Government of C F Holmes, Head Assistant of the Superintendent of Stamps and Stationery, and the removal from office of R H Snell as Superintendent of Stamps and Stationery and the appointment of J A Crawford in his place, November 1838 to October 1858.
- Coll 12, Certificate of Naturalisation granted to Azakiel Zachariah Ter Arakiel, a trader of the town of Calcutta, February to October 1858.
- Coll 13, Proposal for a small public garden at Dacca being made over as a site for the construction of a building which would provide for the Dacca Community a Reading Room, Library, and other rooms for public entertainment, April to October 1858.
- Coll 14, Correspondence regarding the steps taken for the recovery of the amount due to Government for the maintenance of W D S Smith in the Lunatic Asylum at Bhowanipore, February 1856 to October 1858.
- Coll 15, Monthly advances on account of the Bullock Train Establishment, December 1857 to October 1858.
- Coll 16, Papers regarding the steps taken for the submission of an annual report on the publications issued from the Native Presses in the several districts of the Lower Provinces, July 1857 to April 1859. Includes lists of the newspapers, and other periodical publications, published in 1857 in certain districts.
- Coll 17, Correspondence regarding the operation of Act XV of 1857 to regulate the establishment of printing presses and to restrain in certain cases the circulation of printed books and papers; and licences granted to use printing and other presses, February 1857 to October 1858. Includes lists of the newspapers, and other periodical publications, published in 1857 and 1858 in certain districts of Bengal.
- Coll 18, Correspondence regarding the training of young Civil Servants for employment, August 1856 to December 1858.
- Coll 19, R L Mangles and A Smith of the Civil Service permitted to absent themselves from the examination of Assistants held at Patna on the 5th April 1858 due to the state of affairs in Azamgarh, April to October 1858.
- Coll 20, Report of the Board of Examiners upon the first half yearly examination of covenanted assistants and others held during the month of April 1858, together with the Lieutenant Governor's remarks thereon and related correspondence, March to October 1858.
- Coll 21, Correspondence relating to unpassed civil servants who had been permitted to study in the mofussil under the superintendence of public officers, August 1857 to October 1858. The correspondence relates to V Taylor, Mr Lockwood, A Maclean, W S Wells, E E Lowis, A C Mangles, and J D Maclean.
- Coll 22, Complaint brought against F A Vincent, Deputy Magistrate of Barh, by the Deputy Post Master of that place, April to October 1858.
- Coll 23, Papers regarding the state of the Eye Infirmary attached to the Medical College Hospital, the proposed appointment of a Sub Assistant Surgeon to assist the Superintendent of the Eye Infirmary, and the sanction of a slight revision of the Establishment of the Institution, May 1857 to October 1858. Includes a copy of the report on the Eye Infirmary attached to the Medical College Hospital, by C Archer, Superintendent, dated 18th May 1857.
- Coll 24, Correspondence regarding certain irrecoverable balances written off to profit and loss, May to October 1858. The correspondence mostly relates to the case of R W Maxwell.
- Coll 25, Items of expenditure passed by the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal during the 2nd Quarter of 1858.
