Letter No. 8 of 1855 from Lieutenant Herbert Frederick Disbrowe, Assistant Resident in the Persian Gulf, in charge at Bushire to Henry Lacon Anderson, Secretary to the Government, Secret Department, Bombay
- Scope & Content:
-
The letter is conveying the particulars of an interview held with Alee ben Iraheem, an envoy for Shaikh Mahomed ben Khuleefa [Muḥammed bin Khalīfah Āl Khalīfah], Chief of Bahrein [Bahrain] on 1 October 1855.
The subject matter discussed includes a complaint that Shaikh Mahomed ben Abdullah is not sharing his Bahrein revenue fairly and equitably with his brothers; the Chief of Bahrein's concerns respecting an attempt the Al Ali tribe may make to relocate from Ges to Kuteef [Al-Qaṭīf]; and Disbrowe's insistence that all maritime irregularities should be reported to the British Resident in the Gulf no matter how minor.
It also reports that Ameer Fysul [Amīr Fayṣul], the Wahabee [Wahabi] Chief, appears to desire to maintain the reconciliation mediated by Arnold Kemball, late Resident in the Gulf, between the Chief of Bahrein and his exiled relative, Shaikh Mahomed ben Abdullah.
The item has four enclosures:
1. Translation of a letter from the Assistant Resident in the Persian Gulf to the Chief of Bahrein, dated Bushire 2 October 1855.
The enclosure concerns the interview held between the Assistant Resident and the Chief's envoy, with emphasis on the prospect of an relocation of the Al Ali tribe.
2. Letter from the Assistant Resident in the Persian Gulf to Lieutenant Foulerton, Senior Naval Officer, Bushire Roads, dated Bushire 3 October 1855.
The enclosure contains instructions directing the HC Schooner Constance to investigate an allegation that the Al Ali tribe has raided Kuteef in preparation for a migration of their tribe to the Arabian Coast, and asks him to deliver a letter to Shaikh Ali Sultan reminding him of his agreement with the British Government; the Shaikh had agreed to give the Resident three months notice prior to any attempt to relocate his tribe to the Arabian Coast.
3. Translation of a letter from the Assistant Resident in the Persian Gulf to Shaikh Ali Sultan, Chief of the Al Ali in the Island of Ges, dated Bushire 4 October 1855.
The enclosure is reminding the Shaikh that his agreement with the British Government is still in force, and that if it is violated the British Squadron in the Gulf has the authority to seize any vessels migrating towards the Arabian Coast.
4. Translation of a letter from the Assistant Resident in the Persian Gulf to Commodore Richard Ethersey, Commander of the Indian Naval Squadron in the Persian Gulf, at Bassidore [Bāsaʻīdū], dated Bushire 6 October 1855.
The letter is authorising the Commodore to prevent any attempted migration of the Al Ali tribe to Arabian Coast, by force if necessary.
