The collection consists of the following small collections of papers, each of which has a title page, a table of contents, and an extract from the Despatch:
- Coll 1, Quarterly Reports ending 31st March, 30th June, 30th September, and 31st December 1858, of the examinations of the junior civil servants newly arrived in India, and of those who passed in any language, with a copy of the remarks of the Examiners on the exercises.
- Coll 2, Reports on the examination of junior unpassed civil servants held in the months of March, April, May and June 1858.
- Coll 3, Hercules G Ross and D H C Inglis, attached to the North Western Provinces, declared qualified for the Public Service without undergoing the usual examination, March 1858 to May 1859.
- Coll 4, Transfer of the civil servants R P Jenkins, R Wall and W Robertson, from Bengal to the North Western Provinces, the Punjab, and Oudh, March 1858 to May 1859.
- Coll 5, Correspondence regarding an application from certain unpassed civil servants for the modification of the rule under which one Munshi or native teacher was not allowed to draw pay for more than three students in one month, March 1858 to May 1859.
- Coll 6, Sanction accorded to the modification of Rule 3 for the Examination of Junior Civil Servants in the Bombay Presidency, whereby a young civil servant may not be compelled to appear before the Committee for examination until after six months study of a new language, November 1857 to May 1859.
- Coll 7, Enquiry by W Taylor, Judge of Mymensingh, whether a civil servant on furlough in India, under the orders of the Court of Directors, dated the 16th September 1857, would be at liberty to engage in any business or employment during the time of his furlough, with as little restraint as if he were residing in Europe, America, or any other country, May 1858 to May 1859.
- Coll 8, Correspondence regarding the pay of Captain W N Lees being fixed at 1,750 rupees per mensem, April 1858 to May 1859.
- Coll 9, Correspondence regarding the transfer of the house in Little Russel Street, Calcutta, occupied by the Office of the Board of Examiners, to the Military Department, as a place of residence for the sick and wounded officers of the Army, and the arrangements made for the accommodation of the Board's Office in some other building, August 1857 to May 1859.
- Coll 10, Representation by T Oldham, Superintendent of the Geological Survey of India, that during his and Mr Medlicott's absence in 1857, on duty connected with the Geological Survey and Museum, the Civil Auditor retrenched the usual allowances in lieu of travelling charges drawn by them, March 1858 to May 1859.
- Coll 11, Annual Report of the Geological Museum at Calcutta from 1st May 1857 to 1st May 1858.
- Coll 12, Correspondence regarding the proposals made by the Government of Bengal for the appointment of a Special Officer as Inspector of Dispensaries; and the change of the official designation of Dr F J Mouat to Inspector General of Jails in the Lower Provinces, July 1857 to May 1859.
- Coll 13, Correspondence regarding the exoneration of Koylas Chunder Dutt, Sub-Assistant Surgeon at Sambalpur, from a charge of negelect of duty made against him by the Commissioner of Cuttack, December 1857 to May 1859. The correspondence concerns the situation around Sambalpur with respect to the rebels, the high incidence of sickness amongst the troops, and the lack of medical stores.
- Coll 14, Grant of an allowance of 100 rupees per mensem to Dr W Bourne, the Surgeon employed by the East Indian Railway Company at Rajmahal, as a remuneration for his professional services to all Government Officers and Establishments at that station, May 1858 to May 1859.
- Coll 15, Application by A H Blechynden, Secretary of the Agricultural and Horticultural Society, for a copy of the Minute of the Governor General on the experimental introduction of the Quinine Tree into India, and of H Piddington's report on the cultivation of the quininiferous cinchona plant, April 1858 to May 1859. The collection contains only the correspondence relating to the request, the Minute and report are not present.
- Coll 16, Application of J C Coutts for a refund of a sum of rupees 221-4-8, paid by him on account of the passage of some refugees from Patna to Calcutta, March 1858 to May 1859.
- Coll 17, Resolutions notifying the thanks of the House of Lords and House of Commons, of the Court of Directors and of the Court of Proprietors, to the Officers and men of Her Majesty's and the Company's Army and Navy and Marines, and to persons who, though not holding military rank, performed valuable military services during the mutinies, May 1858 to May 1859.
- Coll 18, Correspondence regarding the capture of an elephant, supposed to have been a white one, in the Coimbatore jungles, December 1857 to May 1859.
- Coll 19, Revised rules for the examination of candidates for employment in the lower grades of the Public Service in the Madras Presidency, March 1858 to May 1859.
- Coll 20, Appointment of Major H W Evans and Major A M Hazlewood, to be Special Commissioners under Act XIV of 1857, for the trial of offences within the several districts of the Jubbulpore Division, May 1858 to May 1859.
- Coll 21, Permission granted to the Chief Commissioner of Sind to exercise the powers vested in the local Governments by Act VI of 1857, for the acquisition of land for public purposes, May 1858 to May 1859.
- Coll 22, Explanation by the Government of Bombay, that the orders of the Government of India prohibiting the grant of leave of absence had not been transgressed by that Government, as had been erroneously supposed, June 1858 to May 1859.
- Coll 23, Claim of Messrs Mackey and Company of Calcutta to the sole right of mining for iron, copper, lead, coal and limestone in the Beerbhoom District, March 1858 to May 1859.
- Coll 24, Commendation bestowed by the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal on G F Cockburn, Commissioner of Cuttack, for his valuable services during the disturbances at Sambalpur, March 1858 to May 1859. Includes a report by Cockburn, dated 13th March 1858, on the state of affairs at Sambalpur.
- Coll 25, Correspondence regarding objections urged by the Stud Officers at Buxar to the location of the civil station of the District of Shahabad in the neighbourhood of the Stud, January 1855 to May 1859.
- Coll 26, Recommendation by Lieutenant W N Lees, Secretary to the Board of Examiners, for the addition of a rupee a month to the pay of each of the servants on his Establishment, in consequence of the prevailing high price of provisions in Calcutta, April 1858 to May 1859.
- Coll 27, Enquiry submitted by the Government of Bengal whether two Manipur Princes, named Khoirakpa and Howjon, who had been recaptured, should be brought down to Calcutta as State Prisoners, February 1858 to May 1859.
- Coll 27A, Correspondence regarding the engagement of the India General Steam Navigation Company's steamer Agra at Buxar by the Military authorities, April 1858 to May 1859.
- Coll 28, Representation from Major Jenkins, Commandant of the Bihar Irregular Cavalry, regarding the disallowance by the Civil Auditor of two separate items of 30 rupees in his monthly pay bill, March 1858 to May 1859.
- Coll 29, Correspondence relating to the Annochutter Fund and to the money contribution paid towards the support of a Hindu temple in Cuttack called Seetaram Thakoorbaree [Sitaram Thakurbari], April 1858 to May 1859.
- Coll 30, Correspondence relating to the proposed lighting of the public offices in Calcutta with gas, September 1857 to May 1859.
- Coll 31, Correspondence regarding a vacancy in the Office of Superintendent of Stamps and Stationery, and the question of the appointment of a covenanted or uncovenanted officer, May 1858 to May 1859.
- Coll 32, Correspondence relating to the continued employment, for a further period of one year, of Lieutenant J M Graham as extra Junior Assistant to the Commissioner of Chota Nagpore, May 1858 to May 1859.
- Coll 33, Payment of 12 months gratuity to a Private, a Bugler, a Bheestie, and a Cook of Captain Rattray's Police Battalion, who were present at the siege of Arrah, May 1858 to May 1859.
- Coll 34, Statement, dated 22nd May 1858, showing the former and current Assessments on all Government buildings in the town of Calcutta, under charge of the Civil Architect, Presidency Division.
- Coll 35, Further correspondence relating to the alleged grievances of the Chinese population at Penang, and the enquiry instituted under the orders of the Governor into the complaints of the people, October 1852 to May 1859. The collection includes the proceedings of the Committee appointed to enquire into the complaints and grievances of the Chinese population.
- Coll 36, Correspondence relating to a donation of 7,500 rupees made by Lee Seo Neo, widow of the late Tan Tock Seng, for the erection of a female ward in connection with the Chinese Pauper Hospital, founded by her late husband at Singapore, February 1858 to May 1859.
- Coll 37, Captain H Man permitted to return to his appointment of Resident Councillor at Malacca, May 1858 to May 1859.
- Coll 38, Correspondence relating to the cost of printing the Photographic Views taken by Dr John Murray, Civil Surgeon of Agra, of places in the North Western Provinces, March 1858 to May 1859. Includes a list of photographic views of Benares, Allahabad, Cawnpore, and Delhi taken by Murray.
