- The letter is acknowledging the receipt of a communication from the Resident — dated 16 October 1838 — concerning the state of affairs at Bahrain, and the Province of Nedjd [Najd]. In response, it requests that the Resident reports on the level of tribute that the Shaikh of Bahrain could afford in the event of the island being taken under British protection; and should the Shaikh of Bushire seek to renew his relationship with the British, the Resident's opinion is requested.
