The letter and its enclosures relate to the opium trade at Muscat. The letter is a covering letter as well as a request for further information on the trade (arranged behind the letters it encloses, at folio 17), enclosing a copy of letter no.85 of 1853 (folios 15-16) from The Commissioner in Sind, to the Right Honourable Lord Viscount Falkland, Governor and President in Council in Bombay, dated 15 March 1853. This letter is also a covering letter, enclosing a copy of a letter from the Deputy Collector of Customs (dated 8 March 1853) on the subject of the accuracy of claims regarding the illegal trade of opium between Persia and America. Attached to the Deputy Collector’s letter is a statement made by a Banian (Indian) trader from Muscat, dated 28 February 1853, in which claims of American involvement in the Muscat opium trade are made.
