Letter from Hugh Rees James, Commissioner at Peshawar to Major Lewis Pelly

Letter regarding Pelly's arrival at Herat and his letter to Sirdar Mohamed Ameer Khan [Muhammad Amir Khan] at Candahar [Kandahar], a copy of which had been communication to Government.
The letter goes on to relay the Ameer's uneasiness at Pelly's desire to travel to Candahar via Cabul [Kabul] owing to the dangers of the route he would be required to take, and informing Pelly that the Lieutenant-Governor had written to prohibit him from coming by the Cabul route as well as enclosing a telegram from the Governor-General on the subject (telegram no longer enclosed).
The letter informs Pelly that the Ameer had arranged for his son to provide Pelly with a safe escort from Candahar to Belochistan [Baluchistan].
