- Title:
- Letter from Lord Northbrook (Thomas George Baring, Second Baron Northbrook), Government House, Calcutta to Sir Lewis Pelly
- Scope & Content:
-
Letter, marked private, requesting that Pelly write a short summary of the measures he has taken regarding the general administration of Baroda to show that all measures have been in accordance with the recommendations of the original Commission and its advice to Malharrao, which he had stated he intended to carry out; that the state of affairs was to dangerous not to carry out the necessary reforms; and regarding his actions in the palace which were done unwillingly and only after evidence that it was necessary to be ready in case of unreasonable reactions and attacks.
The letter goes on to remind Pelly that the Commission should be referred to as an Enquiry and not a Trial; regarding Sergeant William Ballantyne undertaking the defence; and asking if Pelly thinks Andrew Richard Scoble and Jonathan Duncan Inverarity will undertake the work quietly and well.
