pp 2005-13 Letter from the Medical Board, regarding investigations into "the prevailing mortality in the Southern Provinces at least in what regards Madura and its vicinity...", requesting that the Council authorise the adoption of sanitary measures. Enclosing:
pp 2013-32 Copy report of Dr M Christy [referred to as Christie throughout the Consultation] on the "epidemical fever" which has prevailed in the Fort of Madura and mofussil since 1809, describing the fever symptoms and rates of sickness amongst European troops and native inhabitants; providing a topographical account of Madura; a meterological report for the years 1801-10; commenting on the relationship between decomposing vegetable and water matter, heavy rainfall, and the appearance of the intermittent fever; the want of an adequate diet, clothing and accomodation amongst the sufferers; and recommending measures to combat the spread of the disease.
pp 2032-37 Copy letter by Superintendent Surgeon Whitelaw Ainslie on the fever, recommending that houses be situated away from jungle hills and marshes; that adequate bedding and clothing be obtained; that a certain diet be adhered to; and that 3 or 4 drams of dried bark of the Margosa be taken with a spoonful of ginger mixed with water before the onset of fever.
pp 2037-55 Letters from the Medical Board and committee investigating the epidemic fever, recommending the encouragement of native doctors, the supply of certain medicines to those affected in the Southern Provinces, and additional assistance.
pp 2051-55 Minutes thereon, recommending that instructions be communicated to Collectors of the affected Provinces, and that assistance be provided to the Superintending Surgeon.
