Gesta Romanorum cum applicationibus moralizatis
- Scope & Content:
-
This part of the manuscript contains a copy of the Anglo-Latin version of the Gesta Romanorum cum applicationibus moralizatis, prefaced by two tables of contents (stories and moralisations).
According to Herbert, the text is 'one of the best representatives of the Anglo-Latin Gesta', and agrees very closely with Harley MS 5259. Herbert provides a detailed list of the 102 tales (see Herbert, Catalogue of Romances (1910), pp. 212-16).
For a list of the surviving manuscripts of the Gesta Romanorum, see Weiske, Gesta Romanorum, 2 vols (1992), II, pp. 121-44 and Bright, 'Anglo-Latin Collections', in What Nature Does Not Teach, ed. by Ruys (2008), p. 404, n. 11.
The contents of this copy are as follows:
ff. 1r-4r: table of contents, listing the stories. Begins: 'De Anselmo imperatore...'. Ends: '...cum suo asino frequentabat et cetera'.
ff. 4v-6v: table of contents, listing the moralisations. Begins: 'De perseverancia contra inconstantes...'. Ends: 'De decimis debite reddendis et de invidia reproborum contra rectores ecclesiarum'.
(A single blank, unfoliated, medieval paper leaf).
ff. 7r-85r: Gesta Romanorum cum applicationibus moralizatis. Begins: 'Ancelmus in civitate Romana regnavit prudens valde...'. Ends: '...qui cum deo patre vivit et regnat et cetera. Amen'.
