- Scope & Content:
-
This part of the manuscript contains the Repertorium vocabulorum Bibliae.
Nine other copies of this text are known to survive, as follows: British Library, Royal MS 8 E VII; Eton College, MS 4; Hereford, Cathedral Library, MS O.V.2; London, Lambeth Palace Library, MS 162; Oxford, Bodleian Library, Bodley MS 863, Laud misc. MS 30; Oxford, Merton College, MSS 12 and 234; Graz, Universitätsbibliothek, MS 322 (see Mynors and Thomson, Catalogue (1993), p. 32).
The anonymous author of this text was a regular canon. The text is commonly attributed (by John Bale, among others) to Alexander Nequam, however the author's citation of John of Genoa's Catholicon (written 1286) demonstrates that the author lived at a later time. The earliest copy of the text - in Oxford, Merton College, MS 234 - suggests that the text cannot have been written later than the mid-14th century. In this manuscript, a later hand has attributed the text to John of Bridlington (f. 195r).
