The collection consists of the following small collections of papers, each of which has a title page, an extract from the Despatch from the Government of India to the Secretary of State for India, in the Home Department (Public), dated the 16th December 1858, No.28, and a table of contents:
- Coll 1, Reports of the examinations of junior unpassed civil servants held in the months of December 1857, and January to March 1858.
- Coll 2, Correspondence regarding W Young, R Wall, E Fairlie and C T Metcalfe, junior civil servants who had failed to pass the language examinations within the prescribed time, December 1857 to December 1858.
- Coll 3, Orders issued for C Robertson, a junior civil servant who had been serving for a time in Bengal, to proceed to Benares for employment under the Government of the North Western Provinces, January to December 1858.
- Coll 4, Grants of leave of absence to W Blunt, C W Moore, Henry Carre Tucker, Frederick H North, and Henry Lushington, January to December 1858.
- Coll 5, Alterations made in the Madras Rules for the examination of junior civil servants, and for granting honours in pursuance of the orders of the Government of India, dated the 28th July 1857, October 1857 to December 1858.
- Coll 6, Suspension of Rules for the examination of junior civil servants in the North Western Provinces [no papers on file].
- Coll 7, Correspondence regarding the date from which the time allowed to young civil servants under the rules for passing, should be computed, January to December 1858.
- Coll 8, Correspondence reporting that no furloughs, except on sick certificate, were to be granted during 1858-59, but that privilege leave could be granted in special cases at the discretion of the local government, October 1857 to December 1858.
- Coll 9, Application from Lieutenant Colonel H Drummond, on his return to India, to be permitted to rejoin his appointment in Kumaon, where he was formerly employed in conducting mineral enquiries, and in connection with the Iron Works, November 1857 to December 1858.
- Coll 10, Report of the arrival in India of William Sowerby to take up the post of Superintendent of the Iron Smelting Works at Dechowrie (or Dechowree) in Kumaon, February to December 1858.
- Coll 11, Report of the discovery by Assistant Surgeon Evezard, in Civil Medical charge of Mergui, of a vein of Galena [lead ore] in the Sownlore Creek, Tenasserim River, January to December 1858.
- Coll 12, Report by Thomas Oldham, Superintendent of the Geological Survey of India, of the result of his recent official visit to Europe, dated 18th December 1857.
- Coll 13, Correspondence regarding arrangements connected with the Geological Survey and Museum, including the appointment of Mr Loftus, one of the assistants of the Geological Survey of India, to take temporary charge of the Museum and Survey Office, February to December 1858.
- Coll 14, Correspondence relating to a specific for the cure of diarrhoea and dysentry discovered by Lieutenant J Frederick Pogson, European Invalid Battalion, September 1857 to December 1858.
- Coll 15, Proposed establishment of Charitable Dispensaries throughout the Lower Provinces of Bengal, October 1857 to December 1858.
- Coll 16, Application from Dr A C Macleod, 17th Regiment Madras Native Infantry, for an extra allowance for performing the civil duties of the station of Futtehpore [Fatehpur], November 1857 to December 1858.
- Coll 17, Correspondence relating to the translation of a pamphlet in the Dutch language on the cultivation of the quinine yielding cinchona tree in Java, which was presented by His Excellency the Governor General of Netherlands India, January 1857 to December 1858.
- Coll 18, Enquiry from R Drummond whether he and his family were entitled to a free passage per Government Steamer from Allahabad to Calcutta, November 1857 to December 1858.

- Coll 23, Proposal made by the Public Works Department for the adjustment of stationery and telegraph charges incurred by the Executive Officers, between the Central Office of Account and the Department concerned, December 1857 to December 1858.
