No. 19, Letter from Lieutenant Coloneal Robert Kyd dated 08 Sep 1788. [pp 258-346] Kyd discusses the expedition of Thiery de Menonville to Guaxaca to retrieve samples of the prickly pear and cochineal insect. The letter contains extensive extracts from Nicolas-Joseph Thiery de Menonville, Traité de la Culture du Nopal et de l'éducation de la Cochenille (Cercles des Philadelphes, 1787).
[pp 347-49] Kyd suggests that meteorological registers be kept by Collectors throughout the provinces.
[pp 349-50] Kyd suggests that a small piece of ground be set aside in each province "for raising specimens of the several staple articles of grain or commerce... to prove the means of affording a constant standard for preserving or meliorating the seed..."
[pp 351-52] Kyd provides details of a scheme in China, where a yearly account is taken of the number of people in a province and the quantities of provision produced by them, in order to identify potential scarcities and take action to address them.
