- Title:
- Letter No. 83 from Ephraim Gerrish Stannus, Resident at Bushire to William Newnham, Chief Secretary to Government, Political Department, Bombay
- Scope & Content:
-
Letter regarding a Ruckum received from His Royal Highness the Prince of Shiraz (Ḥosayn-‘Alī Mīrzā) and a letter from the Minister at Fars (Muḥammad Zakī Khān ) which have been forwarded for the notice of Government.
The letter goes on to report on a visit to Shiraz made by Major Evan Jervis during Stannus's absence from the Residency, and an invitiation to an interview with Zekee Khan [Zakī Khān] whilst he was there, during which Zekee Khan publically accused both Lieutenant Colonel John Macdonald (envoy to the Court of Persia) and Colonel Stannus of having broken the treaty between Britain and Persia by 'exciting the Imam of Muscat to hostilities with the Shaik of Bushire' and having permitted British ships to assist in the Shaik's capture.
The letter goes on to discuss Colonel Stannus's intention of waiting until Lieutenant-Colonel Macdonald had responded on the matter before bringing it to the attention of Government, however a letter from Zekee Khan requesting his assistance in rescuing Shaik Abdool Russool Khan [Abd al-Rasūl Khān] had obliged him to raise the matter in his response to Zekee Khan, and that Zekee Khan's response to this had made it necessary to bring the matter fully to the attention of the Government of Bombay.
Colonel Stannus goes on to discuss the reasons for Zekee Khan's behaviour and subsequent allegations that had been made, including that the marine depot at Bassidore [Bāsa’īdū] was a clandestine settlement, which Stannus believes is an attempt to 'excite the jealous feelings of His Majesty (Fath ʻAlī Shāh).
