The collection consists of the following smaller collections of papers:
- Coll 1, Monthly Reports of the Proceedings of the Protector of Emigrants at Calcutta for December 1856 and January to April 1857, and the Protector of Emigrants at Madras for November 1856 and January 1857.
- Coll 2, Correspondence respecting the detention by the Local Government at Mauritius of a vessel named the Fathe Salam, the Master of which had engaged to convey return emigrants to Calcutta, but had failed to provide a medical officer, January 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 3, Correspondence between the Court of Directors of the East India Company, and the Home Department of the Government of India, relating to the emigration of Indian labourers to the Colony of Natal, March to May 1858.
- Coll 4, Reports on the return emigrants from Mauritius on board the ships Minerva (passenger list included), Futtay Salam (passenger list included), Progress (passenger list included), Soubahdar (passenger list included), Atieth Rahoman (passenger list included), William Fairbairn (passenger list included) and Punjab (passenger list included), January 1857 to March 1858.
- Coll 5, Correspondence regarding a moiety withheld from the Agent of the ship Aga Backer in consequence of certain complaints preferred by the emigrants that returned from Mauritius on board that vessel, September 1856 to March 1858.
- Coll 6, Grant of a further sum of 20,000 rupees to meet extraordinary charges connected with emigration to Mauritius, October 1857 to March 1858.
- Coll 7, Monthly Reports of the Proceedings of the Protector of Emigrants at Calcutta for May to July 1857, and the Protector of Emigrants at Madras for May and June 1857.
- Coll 8, Further correspondence relative to the illegal emigration of natives of India from Aden to Mauritius, December 1856 to May 1858.
- Coll 9, Correspondence from the Government of Madras regarding the illegal emigration of natives of India to the French Colonies, July 1857 to May 1858.
- Coll 10, Correspondence regarding the employment of French ships in the conveyance of Indian labourers, August 1857 to May 1858.
- Coll 11, Correspondence with the Government of Mauritius relating to the arrangements made by that Government for the reception at the Colony of Indian labourers, July 1857 to May 1858.
- Coll 12, Monthly Reports of the Proceedings of the Protector of Emigrants at Calcutta for August to November 1857, the Protector of Emigrants at Madras for August to October 1857, and the Protector of Emigrants at Bombay for September and October 1857.
- Coll 13, Correspondence relating to illegal emigration from the Port of Bombay, July 1857 to July 1858.
- Coll 14, Reports by Dr F J Mouat, Inspector of Jails and Dispensaries in the Lower Provinces, regarding the great mortality which occurred on board emigrant ships on their voyage from Calcutta to the West Indies during the season 1856-57. The reports are concerned with the ships Wellesley, Blue Jacket, Bucephalus, Sir Robert Seppings, Roman Emperor, Adelaide, Eveline, Sir George Seymour, Merchantman, Maidstone, Granville, Burmah, and Scindian, and includes in the appendix lists of those passengers who died or were hospitalised.
- Coll 15, Further communication from Dr F J Mouat, Inspector of Jails and Dispensaries in the Lower Provinces, dated 20th August 1858, transmitting an extract of a letter to his address from the owner of the ship Blue Jacket returned from Mauritius, bearing on some points connected with the great mortality of labourers on the voyage to the West Indies in 1856-57.
- Coll 16, Notification, dated 5th November 1858, intimating that effect had been given to the provisions of Act No.XXXI of 1855 in regard to emigration to St Lucia.
- Coll 17, Monthly Reports of the Proceedings of the Protector of Emigrants at Calcutta for December 1857 and January 1858, the Protector of Emigrants at Madras for November and December 1857, and the Protector of Emigrants at Bombay for December 1857.
- Coll 18, Correspondence regarding an allowance sanctioned to the Assistants of the Master Attendant's Department, for discharging the duties of Assistant Protector of Emigrants at Calcutta after Captain Wright's death, January to December 1858.
- Coll 19, Correspondence with the Government of Bombay regarding the adoption of measures for the commencement of emigration to Grenada and British Guiana, and the scheme of private emigration to the latter colony, February 1857 to December 1858.
- Coll 20, Correspondence with the Government of Bengal relating to the manner of payment to the return emigrants from Demarara by the ship Hamilla Mitchell, of the amount of their savings, June 1857 to December 1858. -
- Coll 21, Returns of emigrants who had proceeded to Mauritius and the West Indies from 1st May 1857 to 30th April 1858.
