The collection contains the following small collections of papers relating to the Indian Mutiny:
- Coll 1, Narrative of events submitted by the Government of the North Western Provinces for the week ending 19th September 1858; Narrative of the Magistrate of Banda for the 16th September 1858; Narratives of the Commissioner of Goruckpore [Gorakhpur] for the weeks ending the 18th and 25th September 1858; Narrative of the Commissioner of Rohilkhand for the week ending the 25th September 1858; Narrative of the Commissioner of Jhansi for the week ending the 24th September 1858; Narrative of the Magistrate of Banda for the 30th September 1858; Report by Captain Griffin, Commanding the Chattarpur Levies, on the state of affairs in the neighbourhood of Bargarh; Dispatch from the Commissioner of Jhansi reporting that the Deputy Commissioner of Chandaree had been driven out of Sultanpur by the rebels and was only holding Banpur and the country round it.
- Coll 2, A second paper on the mutiny of the Bengal Army, and the rebellion in the Bengal Presidency, written by Sirdar Bahadur Subadar Shaik Hedayut Ali of the Bengal Police Battalion, August 1858.
- Coll 3, Further proceedings connected with the revolt, December 1857 to October 1858. The proceedings are on the following subjects: injury done to railway works in the Shahabad District; Mischievous reports in the Patna Division connected with the transfer of the Government of India from the Company to the Crown; Transfer of certain villages in Sambalpur to Moonsiff Rai Roop Singh Bahadur as a reward for loyalty and good conduct; Despatch of guard boats to Ghazipur; Appointment of European or East Indian Train Masters to accompany the detachments of European troops proceeding to the Upper Provinces by Bullock Train, and also to act as interpreters; Case of Captain F R Williamson, Commanding the Gunboat Jumna, in connection with his failure to carry out the order he received to take his vessel up the River Gogra.
- Coll 4, Further papers submitted by the Government of the North Western Provinces connected with the revolt, October to November 1858. The papers are on the following subjects: Reports by the Commissioner of Jhansi on the state of affairs in his Division; Intelligence received from the Commissioner of Jubbulpore; Narratives of the Commissioner of Rohilkhand for the weeks ending the 16th and 23rd October 1858; Narratives of the Commissioner of Goruckpore [Gorakhpur] for the weeks ending the 9th, 16th and 23rd October 1858; Further statement of Government officials wounded, taken prisoner and killed by the insurgents in the Cawnpore District.
- Coll 5, Letter from the Government of India, Home Department, to the Secretary of State for India, No.12, dated 16th November 1858, stating that practically the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal had, during the disturbances, adopted, without previous reference to the Government of India, such protective measures against the rebels as appeared to be urgently called for.
- Coll 6, Further proceedings connected with the revolt of the Native Army, July to November 1858. The proceedings are on the following subjects: Proposed amendment of Act V of 1858 regarding the punishment of prisoners released by the rebels and subsequently re-captured (includes a list of persons sentenced under the Special Commission of Acts XI, XIV, and XVI of 1857 for the week ending 14th August 1858, giving details of name, crime, and sentence); Omission of A Money's name in the notification of thanks on the occasion of the defeat of the rebels under Jeodhur Singh at Kusma on the 4th July 1858; Communicating the thanks of Captain Rattray and his Regiment for the flattering manner in which their services had been acknowledged and rewarded by the Government of India; Orders issued to the Joint Magistrate of Furreedpore [Faridpur] for the despatch to Ghazipur of three of the Pudda fishing boats, to be employed as guard boats on the Ganges between Shahabad and Ghazipur; Captain Rattray's explanation of certain strictures passed on him by Sir Edward Lugard; Expense incurred in removing the hull of the steamer River Bird, and the amount realized by the sale of the wreck; System of supplying Train Masters to the Bullock Train extended as far as Allahabad.
- Coll 7, Narratives of the Commissioner of Goruckpore [Gorakhpur] for the weeks ending the 30th October 1858, and the 6th and 13th November 1858.
- Coll 8, Narrative of events submitted by the Government of the North Western Provinces for the weeks ending the 25th September 1858; the 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th October 1858; and the 6th and 13th November 1858.
- Coll 9, Further proceedings connected with the revolt of the Native Army of Bengal, July to December 1858. The proceedings are on the following subjects: Rewards to certain native officers and men of the Bengal Police Battalion, and a proposal to convert the Police Battalion into a Regiment of the line; Report by Captain Forster relating to a rumoured invasion of Sambalpur from Rewa; Corrections made respecting the orthography of the names of two of the villages granted to Moonsiff Rai Roop Singh Bahadur; Report by A Money, Magistrate of Shahabad, of the military operations which had been carried out by Brigadier Douglas since the 14th October against the Rebels in Shahabad; List of officers holding commissions in the Lower Provinces under the Penal Acts of 1857 (giving details of name, designation of office, district, and date of appointment); Report of the failure of the Joint Magistrate of Fureedpore [Faridpur] to procure the boats and boatmen required for service as guard boats on the Ganges between Shahabad and Ghazipur.
- Coll 10, Correspondence regarding the measures taken for the restoration of public confidence after the suppression of active hostility in the North Western Provinces, July to December 1858.
- Coll 11, Further papers received from the Government of the North Western Provinces regarding the revolt of the Army. The papers are on the following subjects: Intelligence received from the Magistrate of Mirzapur respecting the rebels, 28th November 1858; Narrative of events of the Commissioner of Jhansi for the weeks ending the 1st and 22nd November 1858, and the 2nd December 1858; Weekly abstract of district narratives of the rebellion in the Jubbulpore Division between the 30th November 1858 and the 6th December 1858; Narrative of the Commissioner of Goruckpore [Gorakhpur] for the week ending 20th November 1858.
- Coll 12, Further proceedings connected with the revolt of the Native Army of Bengal, September to December 1858. The proceedings are on the following subjects: Question of whether simple confiscation is a legal punishment under Acts XI and XVI of 1857, and whether if sentence of imprisonment is passed and confiscation adjudged, the imprisonment may be remitted and the confiscation carried into effect; Amnesty clauses of the Queen's Proclamation; Narrative by A Money, Magistrate of Shahabad, of his interview with the rebels near Jagdispur; Instructions regarding the treatment of sepoys belonging to Regiments which murdered their officers; Alleged insufficiency of the first six sections of Act XXVIII of 1857 as a disarming enactment.
- Coll 13, Narratives of the Commissioner of Goruckpore [Gorakhpur] for the weeks ending the 27th November 1858 and the 4th December 1858.
- Coll 14, Further proceedings connected with the revolt of the Native Army of Bengal, November 1858 to January 1859. The proceedings are on the following subjects: Appearance of the rebels in Palamow [Palamau], and the application of the Commissioner of Chota Nagpore for the despatch of troops; Withdrawal of Special Commissions under the Penal Acts of 1857, and the necessity of obtaining the confirmation by the Local Governments of capital sentences passed by any of their subordinate officers; Recommendation by E A Samuells, Commissioner of Patna, regarding the rebel leaders in Behar, to be excluded from free pardon under the Amnesty; Notice by A Money, Magistrate of Shahabad, to mutineers and rebels returning to their homes in Shahabad, that they should appear before the Magistrate to be enrolled and to receive certificates, and also regarding the surrender of their arms; Form of certificate to be given to sepoys, etc, making their submission under the Amnesty.
- Coll 15, Further proceedings connected with the revolt of the Native Army in Bengal, October 1858 to January 1859. The proceedings are on the following subjects: Instructions issued by the Government of the North Western Provinces regarding the treatment of mutineers and rebels who surrender themselves subsequently to the 1st January 1859; Information called for regarding the extent to which advantage had been taken of the amnesty by mutineers, deserters and rebels in the North Western and Lower Provinces; Disarming of the population of the Doab and the Districts north of the Ganges; Question of the competency of Government legally to substitute imprisonment for a term of ten years, for execution of a capital sentence; Grant of a jagir to Mr Boyle, an Engineer in the service of the East India Railway Company, in recognition of his services in the defence of Arrah; Proposal to raise two more parties of European Mounted Police for employment in Behar.
