The collection consists of the following small collections of papers, each of which has a title page, a table of contents, and an extract from a Despatch from the Government of India to the Court of Directors, in the Home Department (Public), No.90, dated 21st July 1858:
- Coll 1, Reports on the examination of junior unpassed civil servants, held in the months of October, November and December 1857.
- Coll 2, Correspondence regarding H F J Kean and E E Lowis, unpassed civil servants, permitted to prosecute their studies at Berhampore and at Fureedpore [Faridpur] respectively, under supervision, November 1857 to July 1858.
- Coll 3, Correspondence regarding the failure of certain junior civil servants to pass the examination in their second language at the Presidency, October 1857 to July 1858. The civil servants concerned were A B Falcon, F B Peacock, W S Wells, R Wall and A T Maclean.
- Coll 4, Sanction given to the deputation and pay as Assistants to W C Turner, C A Elliot, D Inglis, W H Caulfeild and H Ross, junior unpassed civil servants, employed under the orders of the Commissioner of Benares, during the disturbances there, September 1857 to July 1858.
- Coll 5, Request preferred by E Drummond, Officiating Magistrate of Dinagepore [Dinajpur], to be exempted from examination by the second or higher standard, September 1857 to July 1858.
- Coll 6, Correspondence regarding civil servants at the Presidency awaiting opportunities to proceed to the North Western Provinces, allowed the option of accompanying the detachments of European troops proceeding up-country, in the capacity of interpreters, November 1857 to July 1858.
- Coll 7, Application of the French Government at Pondicherry for some copies of the pamphlet on Asiatic cholera by Dr Honigberger, with the report of the Medal Committee appointed to report on his specific, October 1857 to July 1858.
- Coll 8, Correspondence regarding the recommendation of the Madras Government for the appointment of a Health Officer for the Madras Presidency, January 1857 to July 1858. Includes a paper on the subject of sanitation written by Dr J Kellie, President of the Madras Medical College Council, with copies of Minutes recorded upon it.
- Coll 9, Correspondence regarding a recommendation of the Madras Government for the appointment of a First Dresser, on a salary of 35 rupees a month, to each of the Civil Dispensaries at Cochin, Coimbatore, Combaconum [Kumbakonam], Guntoor [Guntur], Honore, Nellore, Tinnevelly and Vellore, November 1857 to July 1858.
- Coll 10, Correspondence regarding applications for licenses to keep and use printing presses under Act XV of 1857, not to be sent in to Government as a matter of form, and on the subject of the provision made for the delivery of pamphlets and books at the Police Office in Calcutta, September 1857 to July 1858.
- Coll 11, Correspondence regarding Government Presses need not be registered under Act XV of 1857, October 1857 to July 1858.
- Coll 12, Memorial from the Revd Charles Gottlieb Pfander, of Peshawar and Missionary of the Church Missionary Society, praying for the privilege of naturalisation as a British subject under the terms of Act XXX of 1852, with related correspondence, October 1857 to July 1858.
- Coll 13, Memorial from S D Seymour praying for compensation for loss of appointment as Editor of the Bangalore Herald, in consequence of his having republished from the Friend of India newspaper, an article headed "The Centenary of Plassey', November 1857 to July 1858.
- Coll 14, Correspondence regarding the large number of dismissals of uncovenanted civil servants in Sind during the first half of 1855, and the case of a copyist in the Political Department of the Bombay Secretariat who took bribes under false pretences, April 1857 to July 1858.
- Coll 15, Correspondence relating to measures adopted by the Government of Bombay in regard to certain articles which were published in the Bombay Times newspaper, and which seemed to the Government of Bombay to infringe the conditions of the license granted to the proprietors of that journal under Act XV of 1857, September 1857 to July 1858.
- Coll 16, Correspondence regarding the completion of Major J T Molesworth's Marathi and English Dictionary, second edition, and a proposal to employ Major Candy in preparing a second edition of his English and Marathi Dictionary, and also an abridgment of the same, September 1857 to July 1858.
- Coll 17, Proceedings of a Committee established at Sylhet for the preservation of peace in the town, August 1857 to July 1858.
- Coll 18, Correspondence regarding the payment to C Mayne, Civil Engineer, of his salary and allowances for the time during which his services were retained in excess of the period for which the employment of such officers in the several districts which suffered from the late innundation was authorised, August 1857 to July 1858.
- Coll 19, Correspondence regarding deputation allowance to J R Ward, Superintendent of carriage and supplies for troops marching in the Lower Provinces of Bengal, September 1857 to July 1858.
- Coll 20, Correspondence regarding an article headed "The Government of India" in the Press newspaper, and reprinted in the Calcutta newspapers, the Englishman and Bengal Hurkaru, in violation of the conditions of their license, October 1857 to July 1858.
- Coll 21, Appointments made by the Supreme Government for vacancies under the Government of Bengal: Captain A P S Moncrieff, Lieutenant J M Graham, Mr Shircore and Lieutenant D J Macleod.
- Coll 22, Correspondence regarding the retention of the services of E H Lushington as Officiating Commissioner of the Districts of Maunbhoom and Singhboom [Singhbum] until the cases pending against Nilmoney Singh Deo and Urjoon Singh, Zemindars of the Pachete and Porahat estates, shall have been brought to a conclusion, October 1857 to July 1858.
- Coll 23, Presentment made by the Grand Jury of Calcutta on the subject of disturbances in the streets of Calcutta caused by European soldiers and sailors, December 1857 to July 1858.
- Coll 24, Proposed measures for restoring the official libraries in the stations of the Central Provinces, September 1857 to July 1858.
- Coll 25, Correspondence regarding the appointment of Captain G G Moxon, 52nd Regiment of Native Infantry, as Personal Assistant to Major Erskine, Commissioner of the Saugor and Nerbudda Territories, October 1857 to July 1858.
- Coll 26, Arrangements for the provisions of supplies for troops on the Grand Trunk Road, from Benares to Cawnpore, October 1857 to July 1858.
- Coll 27, Correspondence regarding the payment of 2,231 rupees, being the amount of compensation for damage done to 13 carriages of the North Western Dak Company by the insurgents near Benares and Allahabad while engaged in the service of Government, July 1857 to July 1858.
- Coll 28, Correspondence on the subject of a panic which prevailed in Singapore regarding convicts being allowed to carry a Taboot [Tabot] in procession during the Muharram, August 1857 to July 1858.
