Colls 1 to 36 consists of papers relating to extracts from a Despatch from the Government of India to the Court of Directors of the East India Company in the Home Department (Public), dated the 11th February 1858, No.22.
Colls 37, 39 to 49 (Vol 1) and 50 to 70 consists of papers relating to extracts from a Despatch from the Government of India to the Court of Directors of the East India Company in the Home Department (Public), dated the 21st May 1858, No.67.
Colls 38 and 49 (Vol 2) consists of papers relating to an extract from a Narrative of the Proceedings of the Government of Bengal, General Department, No.26 of 1857, dated the 1st December 1857, for the third quarter of 1857.
Each collection has a cover sheet, a table of contents, and an extract from the Despatch or Narrative:
- Coll 1, Arrivals of newly appointed civil servants, with reports of their initiatory examination. The new arrivals were J W Furrell, R H Pomeroy, D J McNeile, E E Lowis, R G Currie, W G L Lane, F B Peacock, H D Sweeting, A McLaurin Monteath, F R Hogg, W S Wells, A T Maclean, Lord F Hay and E Fairlie.
- Coll 2, Exchange of appointments and alterations in the posting of junior unpassed civil servants. The civil servants concerned were W M Alexander, W McPherson, R H M Warrand, F R Hogg and Lord F Hay.
- Coll 3, Reports on the examination of junior unpassed civil servants held between January and June 1857.
- Coll 4, Correspondence directing J P Grant, Junior Civil Servant, to return to Calcutta to prosecute his studies in Bengali under the superintendence of his father, the Hon'ble J P Grant, Member of Council, February 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 5, Correspondence regarding certain unpassed civil servants permitted to prosecute their studies in the Mofussil, January 1857 to February 1858. The civil servants concerned were F M Halliday, R H Pomeroy, M W Sandys, C A Elliot, R G Currie, F R Hogg, E E Lowis, W M Alexander and Lord Frederick Hay.
- Coll 6, Correspondence regarding certain unpassed civil servants ordered into the Mofussil on failure to pass at the Presidency, February 1857 to February 1858. The civil servants concerned were G L T Harris, D H C Inglis, E D Lockwood, W H Caulfeild, H S J Ross, H G Ross and W McPherson. The following civil servants were permitted to remain another month at the Presidency: J G Cordery, H Wilson, S H Boult, W L Heeley, A Smith, R Wall, A B Falcon and W Young.
- Coll 7, Leave of absence granted to the following civil servants: C Beadon, J Sladen, G H Freeling and R P Martin.
- Coll 8, Transfer of certain civil servants from Bengal to the North Western Provinces, Punjab and Oudh. The civil servants concerned were G Couper, G H M Ricketts, J Nasmyth, F H Cooper, P S Melvill and A Jenkins.
- Coll 9, Correspondence regarding the resignation of C Allen, Member of the Legislative Council for the North Western Provinces, May 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 10, Correspondence regarding a recommendation of the Government of Bengal for an alteration in Rule 9 of the Rules for the Examination of Junior Civil Servants, to the extent of relieving Divisional Committees from the duty of stating their opinion as to whether the standard of qualification had been attained in those portions of examination coming under the heads of Judicial and Revenue questions, dictation and translation, July 1856 to February 1858.
- Coll 11, Correspondence regarding a proposal by T Oldham, Superintendent of the Geological Survey of India, for field work to be undertaken in the districts of Beerbhoom, Bhaugulpore [Bhagalpur], and the Damin-i-koh, January 1857 to February 1858. The correspondence also mentions the temporary appointment of H F Blanford to take charge of the Geological Museum and of the Geological Survey Office.
- Coll 12, Appointments as Assistants in the Geological Survey of India of W Kennett Loftus, Walter S Wilson, J King and Henry Geoghegan.
- Coll 13, Correspondence regarding the arrangements connected with the Geological Survey of India during the absence in Europe of T Oldham, Superintendent of the Survey, and for the Survey of Madras, May 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 14, Correspondence regarding the travelling allowance for J H Blackwell, appointed to prosecute an investigation into the coal and mineral resources of the Bombay Presidency, November 1856 to February 1858.
- Coll 15, Papers regarding Dr J M Honigberger's alleged specific for the cure of cholera, February 1857 to February 1858. The collection includes a copy of the pamphlet by J M Honigberger, Late Physician to the Court of Lahore, Cholera Its Cause and Infallible Cure and on Epidemics in General (Calcutta, 1857). [Pages 19 to 22 in this collection have been misbound, and can be found at the end of Coll 13].
- Coll 16, Correspondence on the question of the entitlement of military officers in the Public Works Department to gratiutous medical attendance for themselves and their families, October 1855 to February 1858.
- Coll 17, Correspondence relating to the establishment and maintenance of a Charitable Dispensary and Seamen's Hospital at Cocanada, March 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 18, Correspondence regarding the case of Sub-Assistant Surgeon Beharee Lall Ghose of the Kahroor [Kahror] Dispensary, September 1856 to July 1858.
- Coll 19, Correspondence regarding the measures adopted for improving the Medical Department in the Straits Settlements, June 1856 to February 1858. The correspondence includes reports on the condition of Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
- Coll 20, Circular letter addressed to the local governments and other authorities as to the preparation and submission in due time of the Annual Administration Reports for 1856/57, and a letter addressed to the Governor of the Straits Settlements relating to certain objectionable passages in the Straits Report for 1855/56, May 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 21, Correspondence regarding the enquiry of George Evans, with reference to the Patent obtained by him under Act No.VI of 1856, April 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 22, Correspondence regarding the re-examination by the Board of Examiners of persons who had failed to pass in the vernaculars, not to take place until after 3 months had elapsed from the date of such failure, December 1856 to February 1858. The correspondence concerns in particular the cases of J F Muller and J P Linton.
- Coll 23, Proposal for re-organising the Civil and Military Examination Committee at Bombay, August 1856 to February 1858.
- Coll 24, Correspondence regarding the premature publication of certain correspondence in a number of the Bombay Selections from Records, and the adoption of greater care in the preparation of those Selections, January 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 25, Appointment by the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal of a surgeon not in the Covenanted Service to attend His Honour during an approaching tour, December 1856 to February 1858.
- Coll 26, Correspondence regarding the arrangements for conducting the business of the Bengal Secretariat at the Presidency during the Lieutenant Governor's absence at Darjeeling, January 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 27, Correspondence regarding the appointment of Major G Verner, 9th Regiment Bengal Native Infantry, to officiate as Commissioner of Arracan [Arakan], and Ensign Herbert Sconce, 74th Regiment Bengal Native Infantry, as Junior Assistant to the Commissioner of Assam, March 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 28, Government of India Resolution, dated 1st May 1857, regarding the meaning of paragraph 17 of the Resolution of the Government of India, Home Department, dated the 1st May 1854 (relative to the patronage of the Government of Bengal) in which it is declared that the withdrawal of Officers from Military duty for other employment should be by the selection and nomination of the Governor General in Council.
- Coll 29, Representation by the Indigo Planters' Association respecting the occurrence of an outrage in the District of Jessore in which a factory was burnt and a European Assistant, Mr Oram beaten and severely wounded with spears, May 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 30, Correspondence regarding a charge against Sibchunder Deb Roy Bahadur, Deputy Collector of the 24 Parganas, of having made use of language disrespectful to the Government whom he served, May 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 31, Correspondence regarding the continuance of the compensation money payment to the Rajah of Khoordah [Khurda], in connection with the Temple of Juggernath, April 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 32, Notification of the appointment by the Lieutenant Governor of the North Western Provinces, of H B Harington, Judge of the Sudder Dewanny and Nizamat Adawlut, to be a member of the Legislative Council of India, on behalf of the Government of the North Western Provinces, on the resignation of Charles Allen, April 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 33, Proposal to permit R C Oldfield to remain attached to the Agra Secretariat as Assistant Secretary, April 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 34, Application from the Roman Catholic Bishop at Agra, for the grant to the Roman Catholic institutions at Agra and Meerut, of medicines free of charge, or at the original cost, April 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 35, Arrangements in the Straits Settlements consequent on the appointment of Captain Man, Resident Councillor at Malacca, to be Executive Officer and Superintendent of Convicts at Moulmein, November 1856 to February 1858.
- Coll 36, Proposal to substitute printing for copying, and the publication of an official gazette for the Straits Settlements, December 1856 to February 1858.

- Coll 41, Correspondence regarding the failure of W C Turner, of the Civil Service, to pass the usual examination in two of the native languages within the prescribed period, May 1857 to May 1858.
- Coll 42, Correspondence regarding an extension of the usual period allowed for passing in the languages in favour of those civil servants studying at the Presidency, who had joined or might join the Corps of the Calcutta Volunteer Guards, July 1857 to May 1858.
- Coll 43, Correspondence regarding Philip H Egerton, Magistrate and Collector of Delhi, who returned to India after six months leave of absence on private affairs, and was at first attached to the Central Provinces, but afterwards obtained three months leave from the date of his arrival to rejoin his appointment, September 1857 to May 1858.
