The collection consists of the following small collections of papers relating to postal matters, each of which has a title page, a table of contents, and an extract from a Despatch from the Government of India to the Court of Directors in the Home Department (Post Office), dated the 25th February 1858, No.2:
- Coll 1, Statement of the actual revenues and charges of the Post Office Department of the Indian Governments in the year 1855/56, together with an abstract of the estimated revenues and charges in the Post Office Department for the year 1856/57.
- Coll 2, Correspondence regarding minor details of postage receipts not to be exhibited in the financial returns and accounts of the Department, with express postage only to be distinguished from the other receipts, July 1856 to February 1858.
- Coll 3, Correspondence relating to the second box of the missing postage stamps of season 1855, February 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 4, Correspondence regarding authority given for the sum of 4,000 rupees, being the amount value of 50 sheets or 16,000 of 4 anna postage labels found deficient in an invoice of 28 chests of labels received in October 1855, to be written off the accounts of the Superintendent of Stamps, October 1856 to February 1858.
- Coll 5, Suggestion made by the Director General of the Post Office of India that all unstamped or insufficiently stamped documents transmitted through the Post Office, as on the Public Service when sent to the Superintendent of Stamps in view to their being correctly stamped, should have the proper amount of postage prepaid by the parties to whom they belong, January 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 6, Question raised by the Inspector of Ordinance as to the charge for postage upon a cover containing the last pay certificate of a warrant officer, removed from one Magazine to another, January 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 7, Correspondence regarding postage to be paid on promissory notes held in security for the performance of contracts and sent to the Civil Treasuries for the realisation of interest, January 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 8, Correspondence regarding letters addressed to soldiers being exempted from forward postage when re-directed, April 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 9, Correspondence regarding stamp vendors and sale commissioners being authorised to correspond free of postage on the Public Service with the Collectors of their respective districts, April 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 10, Complaint by Captain G Munbee, Executive Engineer at Erinpura, respecting the occupation of one half of the dak bungalow at that station by the Post Office to the extreme inconvenience of travellers, November 1856 to February 1857.
- Coll 11, Appeal from Frederick Glen Harrison, Inspecting Post Master in Berar, against his dismissal from Office, February 1854 to February 1858. Includes papers regarding Harrison's medical condition.
- Coll 12, Application for a special allowance to be made to the staff officers who performed duties connected with the Post Office in Persia, March 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 13, Correspondence regarding the transfer from P Hewett to Dunshaw Manookjee of the contract for the conveyance of mails and banghies between Karachi and Hyderabad, May 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 14, Correspondence regarding the renewal of the contract for the conveyance of the mail by runners between Malligaum and Ahmednagar in the Bombay Presidency, January 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 15, Correspondence regarding the conveyance of the mail between Hyderabad and Sukker in the Province of Sind by horses at a maximum monthly expenditure of 2,284 Company Rupees, April 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 16, Application from Dr Thomas Thomson, Superintendent of the Botanic Garden, to be allowed the privilege of sending all letters and parcels free of postage, December 1856 to February 1857.
- Coll 17, Correspondence regarding a representation by the Deputy Post Master of Arrah, respecting the interference of H C Wake, Officiating Magistrate of Shahabad, with the Post Office there, June 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 18, Correspondence regarding a complaint by M Balfour, Officiating Secretary to the Agra and United Service Bank, that 22 letters, many containing bills of exchange on London, posted by the Bank at the General Post Office in December 1856 and January and February 1857, had never reached their destinations, March 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 19, Correspondence regarding a complaint by certain Calcutta merchants and shroffs of the state of the daks from the North Western Provinces, and the non-receipt of their customary letters and hoondees, etc., from their correspondents in the Upper Provinces, June 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 20, Retrenchment of rupees 279-11-9 from the salary of the Post Master General of Bengal, for an Establishment of extra clerks entertained against the express orders of the Director General of the Post Office, July 1856 to February 1857.
- Coll 21, Memorial from F F Campbell, late Inspecting Post Master of Chittagong, referring to his dismissal from office and requesting to be furnished with a statement of the charges against him, and that in the interim he might be restored to his appointment at Chittagong, May 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 22, Correspondence regarding the continuance for 1855/56 of the allowance of 100 rupees per mensem to Mr Dove, Deputy Post Master General at Calcutta, for the Superintendence of the Bullock Train Office, March 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 23, Correspondence regarding the contract entered into with Nilmoney Coar for the supply of wax cloth, oil, candles, dammer, gunny and other articles, to the General Post Office at Calcutta for a monthly payment of 745 rupees, May 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 24, Correspondence regarding the sanction given by the Government of the North Western Provinces to the official letters of the Roman Catholic Bishop of Agra being franked at the Secretariat Office, July 1856 to February 1858.
- Coll 25, Correspondence regarding the contract with the Agra Orphan Press for the execution of the printing work of the Post Office in the North Western Provinces, December 1856 to February 1857.
- Coll 26, Correspondence regarding the contract with Newaram of Agra for the conveyance of the mails and parcels between Muttra and Agra by carriage dak, at 6 and 7 miles an hour, and terminable by either party at 3 months notice, January 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 27, Correspondence regarding the inefficient Post Office arrangements at Meean Meer [Mian Mir], August 1856 to February 1857.
