The collection consists of the following small collections of papers, each of which has a title page and a table of contents:
- Coll 1, Proposition submitted by Lieutenant Colonel A S Waugh, Surveyor General of India, to affiliate the Lucknow Observatory to the University of Calcutta, January to August 1857. The correspondence also refers to the re-employment of the Lucknow Observatory instruments and their transferrence to a station better adapted for astronomical research in the Sub-Himalayan Mountains.
- Coll 2, Proceedings of the first meeting of the Senate of the University of Calcutta, held on the 3rd January 1857.
- Coll 3, Correspondence regarding the case of Rangildass Hurkissen Dass, a pupil of the Normal Class at Surat, who preferred to accept an appointment as a teacher in a vernacular school, and repudiated any obligation to enter the educational service; also suggestions respecting the rate of stipends allowed to pupils in vernacular normal schools, and the nature of the instructions given to them, February to August 1857.
- Coll 4, Proposal for the grant to the Reverend J M Mitchell of 1,000 rupees in acknowledgement of his services as a visitor of the Poona College, January to August 1857.
- Coll 5, Correspondence regarding a remonstrance from the Trustees of the Funds of the Elphinstone Institution against the refund of the surplus income derived from the Government contributions capitalised by them during the past two years, January to August 1857.
- Coll 6, Correspondence regarding the grant of 600 rupees per mensem for a period of two years, to the School of Industrial Art in Calcutta under certain stipulations, October 1856 to August 1857.
- Coll 7, Enquiry from the Governor of the Straits Settlements whether the orders of the Court of Directors contained in their Despatch No.96 of 1856, dated the 1st October (exempting female schools from the operation of that clause of the grant-in-aid rules which required that schooling fees be levied) rescinded the previous instructions of the Government of India, disallowing the proposed assignment of grant-in-aid to certain female religious schools in the Straits Settlements, January to August 1857.
- Coll 8, Correspondence regarding an offer by the inhabitants of the Talukas of Ranebednoor and Misricote in the Dharwar Collectorate to contribute a moiety of the cost of local vernacular schools, January to August 1857.
- Coll 10, Correspondence reporting on the death, on the 17th October 1857, of Thomas Beaumont, whose appointment to the Education Department as a school master in the North Western Provinces was notified in the Public Despatch to India, No.85 of 1857, dated the 17th June 1857.
- Coll 11, Further correspondence respecting the private school established by C W Stamm, a missionary, at Dinapore, April to December 1857. Includes a report on the Dinapore School by the Inspector of Schools, Behar Division, dated 18th September 1857.
- Coll 12, Proceedings of the annual meeting of the Senate of the Calcutta University, held on the 12th December 1857.
