The collection consists of the following small collections of papers, each of which has a title page and a table of contents:
- Coll 1, Correspondence regarding the manner in which the excess of expenditure over the receipts of the Calcutta University was to be disposed of in the public accounts, June 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 2, Correspondence regarding the appointment of a Vice Chancellor and Senate of the Madras University, March 1857 to February 1858. Includes a list of the Fellows of the University.
- Coll 3 (Vol 1), Application from the Right Reverend Dr J Fennelly, Roman Catholic Bishop of Madras, that the military orphans at that Presidency might be allowed a sum equal to the monthly cost of maintaining a child in the Bengal Lower Orphan School, September 1856 to February 1858. Includes a list of military orphans in receipt of Government allowances in the Catholic Orphan Asylum on the 1st April 1856, with subsequent admissions (on the 1st August 1856).
- Coll 3 (Vol 2), Recommendation by the Government of Bombay, that the allowance of 5 rupees per mensem, sanctioned for the children of European soldiers in the Bombay Byculla schools, may be extended to those admitted into the Bombay Scottish Female Orphanage and the Roman Catholic orphanages, respectively, December 1854 to March 1858.
- Coll 4, Correspondence with the Government of Bombay on the subject of a proposal made by the Committee of the Bombay Educational Society, through the Bishop, to present to Government an annual report of the state of their several Byculla schools as to christian knowledge, September 1856 to February 1858.
- Coll 5, Correspondence regarding the grant by the Bombay Government of a gratuity of 400 rupees to the Reverend R Wallace, upon the occasion of his retiring from the office of Master of the Poona College, February 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 6, Correspondence regarding the suggestion made by the Director of Public Instruction at Bombay to establish low caste schools, January 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 7, Correspondence regarding the price demanded for one of the holdings in the site selected for the Presidency College, the selection of another site, and the postponement of the building of the College, January 1857 to April 1858.
- Coll 8, Correspondence regarding a proposition for re-modelling the scale of salaries and increasing the number of Inspectors employed in the Educational Department in Bengal from four to five, March 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 9, Correspondence regarding the continuance for another year of the grant of 2,400 rupees, for the support of a weekly journal in Bengali called the Education Gazette, published in connection with the Education Department, March 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 10, Renewed application of the Government of the North Western Provinces for the appointment of the Reverend Mr Budden, as an exceptional case, to be Inspector of Schools for the Kumaon and Garhwal Districts, April 1857 to February 1858.
- Coll 11, Further correspondence regarding the allowances of Major T Candy as Mahratta Translator; and also on the subject of the salary of the Principal of the Poona College, and the appointment of Edwin Arnold to that post in succession to Major Candy, February 1857 to March 1858.
- Coll 13, Rules proposed for affording encouragement to European officers of the Education Department to study the vernaculars, July 1857 to March 1858.
- Coll 14, Correspondence regarding the failure of the Bombay Government to establish a College in the city of Surat, August 1857 to March 1858.
- Coll 15, Application on behalf of the anglo-vernacular school established by the Free Church of Scotland Mission at Bansberia in Zillah Hooghly, for a grant in aid of 150 rupees a month, and a donation of 300 rupees for new furniture, maps, etc., March 1857 to March 1858.
- Coll 16, Correspondence regarding the proposal of the Director of Public Instruction to raise the salary of the Professor of Law in the Presidency College, from 400 rupees to 1,200 rupees a month, and the salary of the Assistant Professor of Law from 300 rupees to 400 rupees a month; and a prohibition on the practice of conferring two or more offices, of which the salaries had been fixed generally on the understanding that each was sufficient to command the services of a separate incumbent, upon one individual, April 1857 to March 1858.
- Coll 17, Correspondence regarding the services of William Buyers, School Master, being placed at the disposal of the Lieutenant Governor of the Central Provinces, July 1857 to March 1858.
- Coll 18, Correspondence regarding the services of Thomas Beaumont and William Hudson, enagaged as School Masters in the North Western Provinces, being placed temporarily at the disposal of the Principals of the Presidency College and of the Madrissa College, respectively, September 1857 to March 1858.
- Coll 19, Application from the Resident of Hyderabad for an allowance of 30 rupees per mensem for a library which had been established in that city, June 1857 to March 1858.
