Arch erected to welcome Lord Elgin: 'The Burmese Buddhist Boys' and girls' schools erected a really fine pandal in front of the school in Canal Street, the whole representing the caves at Maulmain. Scattered about on the steps of the Cave were imitation monasteries. Above and right in front were two figures of dancers while several others were to be seen peeping out from among the foliage with which the cave was decorated. High above was a small and well-modelled pagoda with several minarets around it' (unidentified newspaper cutting).
