The caption continues with a quotation from Scott of the Shan Hills: 'It was my piteous fate to have the largest hut, to be the most unworthily popular, and consequently to have the most constant and crowded levée...our reception went far beyond cordiality. It was a hideous nightmare in its savage enthusiasm' [p.242]. The photograph, taken during the 2nd Wild Wa Expedition and reproduced in Scott of the Shan Hills, facing p.242, shows the road through the village, Scott's house in the foreground with a group of Was gathered in front of it.
