Rao Desalji's 'Chatri', [Bhuj]. Photographer: Unknown
- Scope & Content:
-
Photograph of Rao Desal’s chhatri at Bhuj, Gujarat, taken by an unknown photographer during the 1870s. The chhatri is a funerary monument and was one of a group of cenotaphs belonging to the Raos of Kutch, the rulers of Bhuj, which stood to the west of the town bordering the Hamirsar Tank. Most took the form of domed kiosks or pavilions set on plinths. The small, beautiful chhatri of Rao Desal II (ruled 1819-1860) has an unusual quadrangular shape with a square chhatri roof and is elaborately carved with floral and foliate motifs, human figures and animals. This view of the cenotaph shows the steps leading up to the chhatri flanked by four carved figures representing palace servants and musicians.
