Photograph of the view of the Gagan Mahal or durbar hall in Bijapur. The Gagan Mahal or Heavenly Palace is the Assembly or Durbar Hall built by Ali Adil I in 1560. The facade is dominated by an immense arch, 20 metres long and 17 metres high, flanked by two narrow high archways. At the rear there was a huge central hall with a smaller room at each side. The ceiling has collapsed but it seems to have been made of wood and supported an upper floor where the sovereign's private apartments were.
