View looking towards the temples on the rock at Trichinopoly. Lyon's 'Notes to accompany a series of photographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: '250 is the Rock, from an excellent point of view. It is seen from every direction, and forms a grand and striking object, rising abruptly from the plains to the height of 300 feet. It is composed of grey granite, and has on its summit a pagoda dedicated to the Hindu God Ganesa or Pulliar. That, seen on the left of the photograph, is dedicated to Shiva, and is internally richly ornamented, though its external appearance is more like that of a fortress, as, in fact, it was intended it should be.'
