General view of a gopura in the Ranganatha Temple at Srirangam. Lyon's 'Notes to accompany a series of photographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: '262 - shows the east face of the same Gopura as was illustrated in the last photograph. Though possessing the same number of storeys as the great gateway (No. 258, 259) it is neither so tall, nor so graceful in outline, but its sculptures are good and sharp, and not overdone or extravagant. In front of it, is one of the 16 pillared porches, which are found everywhere throughout these temple courts, and form such pleasing resting-places for the pilgrims who frequent them.'
