Close, head-on view of a portion of the base of the Tirumalaya Nayaka Gopura of the Minakshi Sundareshvara Temple at Madurai. Print surface slightly crazed from shrinkage of collodion negative. Lyon's 'Notes to accompany a series of photographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: '266 - The next Photograph presents a part of the highly ornate facade of this gateway on the side next the road, and is well worthy of study as an index to the age of these buildings. On comparing it, for instance, with Photograph 251 from Seringham, it will be seen how much more attenuated and more modern-looking that gateway is, than this one at Madura.' Another copy at Photo 1000/29(2916).
